I'm after experience of what anti-slip you have used on your gunwales. I'm not after using sand or anything that needs putting on top of a wet coat of paint but a product that you mix into the paint before applying - easier and quicker to use.

I have used International non-slip but wonder if there is something that is a bit more 'rougher' out there.

I have done a quick search and come across :

International Non-slip Aggregate (Non-Slip Additive for 750ml Paints)

Hempel's Anti-slip Pearls (Hempel's Anti-Slip Pearls 67420 - Hempel)

Epifanes non-skid beads (Epifanes Nonskid Beads | Epifanes)

Thanks in advance.

On my old sailing dinghy I used International non-slip throughout the cockpit, but then I sanded the ribs as well. I remember it being decent stuff, and narrowboats are a somewhat less energetic use scenario.

The problem you may find adding/mixing anything coarser into your paint is that the aggregate might not spread evenly when you apply it to your gunwales. There are even some ready mixed non-slip paints on the market which perform equally miserably in terms of appearance.

It's not an additive but I use International Interdeck non-slip paint on my decks and gunwales. It already has plenty of additive mixed in and it's easy to apply and spreads evenly. It comes in a very limited range of colours but I have spoken to International's technical dept who told me it's fine to add small amounts of single part polyurethane paint to alter the shade.

Check out 'Kiwigrip'. I used it on a flush decked yacht in NZ and found it really easy to apply, hard wearing and not too expensive.

The product is a fairly vicous water based paint. The pattern is applied with a textured roller.

Worth a look.

I bought some non slip tape from Lidl about 25 years ago and it's still in place. I doubt if it's still in the middle aisle.

I used the non slip grsnules on the gunnels, the tape is not much good as it is a faff to apply and does not cover much. I like the edges to be covered as well as the horizontal surfaces.

Just mix as per msnufactureres guideline, i think ibusesca third of a packet, packet cost  £5.99. Mix well during application. Use cheap brush.
