There are reports of a boat fire today at Gayton marina.

It’ll be very interesting to find what went wrong with this: their publicity said it’s powered by a Beta 10kW motor with Lithium batts from their (ABC) Onboard Energy Direct range. Looking on the website for Onboard Energy Direct they only seem to sell Victron batteries, if so all the info about what was happening to them should be in VRM for analysis. (Assuming it was the main batteries at fault and not some  nmc powered phone or similar onboard)

And to think on Saturday we were moored up overnight opposite the boat. Hope no-one was hurt.

The water in the video doesn't seem to be having much effect on the fire.

Most of it doesn’t look as though it’s actually getting onto the fire - must be the England penalty squad aiming the hose.

It looks like the company operate a range of electric days boats. They have within the last hour posted an advert on facebook for day boat hire, SO I presume this incident doesn't affect the rest of the fleet.

You probably find their FB account is run by some marketing outfit who now knowt

Corrected that for you! 😁

I did hear that based on results we should call the Lionesses the England football team and the other lot the England Men's team.

They've earned it!

The comments under that video show just what a bunch of stupid people inhabit this earth that we live on.

Will it be like the "electric" range rover* that exploded and  destroyed the car park at Luton.

Gas explodes with a bang.

We shall see what caused it later.

* It was a diesel range rover

I deliberately avoided reading them, because I expected they’d be rubbish.

I read them but couldn't listen to the bloke in the video. What is it about vloggers that makes their voices so annoying.

Most of them are, I think it’s because they try to sensationalise everything.

These are interesting figures (source: Fleet News)

Vehicle Fire Rates in the UK (2024)

Vehicle Type Estimated Fires per 100,000 Vehicles Estimated % of Vehicles That Caught Fire
Petrol 1,530 1.53%
Diesel 1,530 1.53%
Electric (EV) 25 0.025%

What's needed is the same table but using the numbers of vehicle fire reports in the media.  I expect it would be exactly the opposite.

This is the best I can do; the info isn’t really collated in any detail (I used Copilot to produce the below).

Vehicle Fire Rates vs. Media Coverage (UK, 2024)

Vehicle Type Number of Fires % of Total Fires % of Media Mentions Fire Rate (per 100k vehicles) Coverage Bias
Petrol/Diesel ~14,768 ~98.5% ~30% ~153 Underreported
Electric (EV) 232 ~1.5% ~70% ~25 Overreported

Well, cant be much wrong, you can book it from 3rd September.

Their  mechanics and joiners are going to be busy then 😂

Edit: actually what they did at Anderton when the diesel in the dayboat expired was to just use whatever boat wasn’t booked out that week as a day boat.

A bit of filler, spot of paint, right as rain.

I am curious as to where the lithium batteries were/are and a gas bottle as the rear deck has not obviously burnt. It looks to be just a cabin fire, possibly wilful?

This is one of their other electric dayboats, I would imagine they’re all the same layout- batteries under rear deck.

If the batteries are under the rear deck and it was a battery fire why is only the inside burnt and not the rear deck?🤔

I suspect because it is an electric trip boat, and people have assumed the battery bit....

Remember, assume - make an ass of u and me... ;)

Yes- might turn out to be the headline should be “ Electric day boat catches fire and the Lithium Batteries survived it” 😂

But I doubt you will red that

Fire seems centred about where the galley is, so my first guess would have been hob fire that got out of hand then igniting gas bottle, but looking at the spec on their site it’s fully electric with induction hob so no gas. Still going for galley incident though.
