The oft quoted 'Diesel Knock' is not always from engine components whizzing up and down and round and round, but from the fuel injection equipment.

For the education of others here. Technically, the term "diesel knock" is only tangentially related to parts whizzing up and down and is to do with injector spray pattern and the fuel's cetane rating, so certainly from the fuel injection equipment, but it seems the public call any similar knocking sounds diesel knock.

Quite.

From much direct experience of being I/C a busy diesel shop, a pump on test sounds very like a diesel engine running. Fact.

As there is no combustion, I remain happy with my premise that most diesel noise these days -especially for ECU equiped injection systems-is pretty much down to the high pressure fuel injection system.

Even the old DPAs and inline pumps don't half clatter on the test bench. The college had to provide ear defenders for the staff and students when in the pump room.
