Did Kegworth Shallow Lock ever bypass a weir? This extract from the 1850s six inch map suggests not

In which case one wonders why they built a lock?

Interestingly the maps refer to this as New Lock and Kegworth Deep as Old Lock, so presumably it was a later addition

And now on the CaRT Asset Map, what we once knew as Kegworth Deep is Kegworth New and the flood lock is Kegworth Shallow. Of course, the 'New' may have come in when the earlier lock was replaced alongside, as at Ratcliffe Lock

It was always Kegworth Deep until very recently, all my Nicholsons list it as such as well.

Looking at my collection of old canal guides:

L A Edwards Inland Waterways : Kegworth Old and Kegworth New (Flood)

1965 British Waterways Guide Part 3 : Kegworth Top and Kegworth Shallow

1971 The Canals Book : Kegworth Top and Kegworth Shallow

1974 The Canals Book : Kegworth Top and Kegworth Shallow

1997 Nicholsons Part 3 : Kegworth Deep and Kegworth Shallow

Some (https://narrowboatworld.com/14815-yet-another-long-job) claim that the 'original' Deep was renamed New so as not to frighten nervous newbies! That author seems not to have heard of the even earlier names!

Also, our cruising logs (a bit primitive in those days) in 1968 and 1975 do show an in and out time for Kegworth Shallow indicating that even mid summer it was not set as a flood lock with both ends open. That accords with my very vague memories.

Those changes get interesting - in effect the fall of Redhill lock was moved up to Kegworth Deep. Redhill lockis now normally level, Kegworth is 3 feet deeper than the original, Ratcliffe has the same rise and fall as before but both ends are about 3 feet lower.

So what happened at Kegworth shallow lock? Was it lowered completely or did it used to have a rise and fall?

The 1888 Returns suggest that there was no fall as it was a 'Flood Lock', at the bottom of the page.

Bit full today, dropping 2" over the length of the lock, so with no further rain forecast, the boats should be OK.
