Hand Spike

So I have a proper Calder and Hebble hand Spike, a proper old solid piece of kit I've had years. Sat doing nothing, free to anyone on here, can't be arsed with eBay nonsense so grab a freebie. Yours for cost of postage at whatever that will be. Just pm me taa.

I’ve a other,

free to anyone passing,

 

I’m sure only one lock needs that spike,

otherwise just the gate paddles will get a boat through,

 

fun to use mind

and you do feel sort of safe walking down the tow path with one of them on your shoulder.

IIRC there are one or two that really fill very slowly without the spike operated paddles. There were several locks from Salterhebble to the Huddersfield Broad that had these when we were last there in 2021. @IanD may remember better as they were there last year I think?

Indeed so lol. Not an offensive weapon per se yer honor. Its been near my front door the last four years gathering dust!!

There are several locks which can't be operated without a handspike, I can't remember exactly how many...

 

A handspike can be made from a cheap pickaxe handle with the aid of a saw... 😉

Two the last time I did it.  All the others don't need a handspike but some of them you can choose to use one as well as a windlass.

I seem to recall that when I passed that way I simply fished a bit of wood out of the canal (I think it may have been a bit of a pallet).
