emm Posted March 11, 2025 Report Posted March 11, 2025 Does anyone know of any boatyards or marinas that have self service pay at the pump with a bank card style diesel pumps? Thanks!
Alan de Enfield Posted March 11, 2025 Report Posted March 11, 2025 I have never come across one. I'd guess that it would make your declaration percentages difficult to apply, unless you always accepted a 'standard' 60/40 and the pump was set up to that split. Why do you ask ?

Why do you ask ? and most importantly you'd miss the opportunity to to into the shop and get some sweets!
nickd Posted March 11, 2025 Report Posted March 11, 2025 There used to be one at Sawley on the cut from the R Trent weir to the locks. Mind you that was a few years ago and it could have changed since then.

Thanks! It is a while back but I seem to recall that at that time White Bear on the L&L did that - they were minimally staffed and it allowed sales 24/7, but it may have changed, of course! I have another memory at the back of my mind but cannot recall just where. As had been said, it does entail a specific split but that is the boatyard and customers choice -if you don't like that figure, go elsewhere!
Onewheeler Posted March 11, 2025 Report Posted March 11, 2025 On the way out to the Saône from the marina at St Jean de Losne. Good price too. 1
Tony Brooks Posted March 11, 2025 Report Posted March 11, 2025 When we were there the marina at the end of the Prees Branch (Llangollen) did that, but that was a few years ago.

Yes they still have a pay at the pump, but you need to register and get an AquaVista fuel card before you can use it, which you to insert into the pump before your bank card for it all to work.

I just wondered if it might be an option for a small boatyard with no staff. Not sure about possible pollution issues but other yards have self service with payment in shop (I’m thinking Braunston Marina) Edited March 11, 2025 by emm Spelling

Do all Aquavista sites have this setup? That's certainly how it works at the three I know well - White Bear, Galgate and Glasson - and you've just confirmed it's the same at Sawley.

baldlimey Posted March 11, 2025 Report Posted March 11, 2025 It has been a few years but last time I was in pillings you could

It was the same at kings marina and Hull marina when we were there - HOWEVER You could only get the card if you moored in one of their marinas and it was not available to anyone else. That is why I didn't mention it in my earlier post as it is not (was not) available to the 'public'. There were (are?) two cards - I think they were Blue and Green, one for liveaboards which allowed you to buy the fuel at 100% domestic rate, and the other at a fixed 60/40 rate. Somehow I ended up with both cards.

I know that generally it was attended service and you'd get filled up and go across the road to the office to pay - I think you had to show your card for the split you were declaring. It was very difficult getting a 23 foot beam boat tight into the corner where the pump was. and even harder getting back out.

What I would like to know if anyone can answer, is can you use the Aquavista pumps 24hr or only during their Marina office hours?

No: certainly at Cropredy and Brinklow it is staff operated. But both of those have quite busy offices and staffing levels.

But that was a few years ago. I think I still have the cards somewhere on the boat. I don't refuel at Hull as its always expensive . I heard it was £2 per litre last year although that might have been an exaggeration.
Adam Posted March 12, 2025 Report Posted March 12, 2025 Surely selling red diesel "pay at pump" can't work realistically, given the marina is burdened by hmrc to record details/ require declarations from purchasers. Bear in mind the declaration is your's to make. Maybe if they sold white diesel
Momac Posted March 12, 2025 Report Posted March 12, 2025 Just now, Adam said: Surely selling red diesel "pay at pump" can't work realistically, given the marina is burdened by hmrc to record details/ require declarations from purchasers. This is where the Aquavista system comes in as it identifies the customer and the required declaration via a pre-arranged card. 4 minutes ago, Adam said: Maybe if they sold white diesel White diesel would have to be at the full road duty rate which at the waterside would make it (at least) Motorway service station diesel prices and not supermarket diesel prices . I don't think most boaters would be too happy about that.

I can’t fully remember what details Aquavista asked for but it wasn’t a lot, Name, D.O.B. but once they put it into their computer they knew everything, so I don’t know who they are linked into, but I imagine if you tried to not be truthful when applying for their fuel card they will suss you.

I just wondered if any yards had pay at pump but I’m guessing not apart from the aquavista system ? thanks for the info all!
