Pinned Topics - Too many?

There seems to be to be a lot of 'Pinned Topics' on this forum. Predominantly in the General Boating sub- forum, but elsewhere as well. 

 

Could I suggest to the forum admins/moderators, but also ask for the thoughts of others members, about maybe reducing the number of them, or perhaps moving some of the pinned topics from General Boating to other sub-forums. 

 

I understand the usefulness of ones such as the fuel boat tracking, but there is one regarding advice about visiting the Fens that I really wonder if it needs to be 'Pinned', or could perhaps be moved to the Cruise Diaries sub-forum where it would be more relevant. Do that many people really want advice about visiting the Fens that it needs to constantly be the first thing we all see? 

 

The one about a reminder about bad language could go into the Site Announcement section, as after all that's effectively what it is. Is there a constant issue with bad language that it needs to constantly be there? Maybe it could be unpinned, but when there is a reoccurring issue then it could be re-pinned for a fixed period of a few weeks. 

 

There are others as well like the Calor Gas thread, that's had a handful or replies in 2 years and was started 4 years ago during COVID.

 

Some might say there are bigger issues going on in the world, but this is a frustration of mine every time I visit the forum. Numerous times a day I have to scroll past the same old threads that have had no updates, just to get to the new content in General Boating. If I try and use the forum in the other way where I see all topics one one page, rather than opening the forum on the sub-forums selection page, I see even more and have to scroll down forever.

 

Could some though be put into this?

I must be doing something wrong as I don't see any pinned posts and in fact I didn't know there was such a thing 😀..I see new posts in all.groups except political ( where I never go having been told how to avoid it ) .

Sorry I can't be much help but no doubt those more internet savvy than I will be along soon.

Never seen any. I just click on the kitchen sink draining board thingy top rightish and it loads stuff. Nowt is pinned.

If your doing something wrong so am I.  I do see the occasional pinned thread but nothing worth remarking on.

Not “wrong”, but you are looking directly at the sub forum of “general boating”. Something I never do, and I suspect most people don’t. We use “view new content” (VNC) which shows the latest posts in all the sub forums, except mercifully the politics one. People especially newcomers often post in the wrong section, but VNC means I get to see them.

 

You are right that there are a lot of pinned topics many of which haven’t changed for a long time, but this is inconsequential for people viewing the forum via VNC.


I suppose you could also argue that if most people never see the pinned topics, their usefulness is very limited!

On an iPhone it looks like this button circled in yellow.

I think best thing to do in this instance is to report any you feel that no longer required to be pinned and give brief explanation why. (e.g. very old / no longer relevant etc) The Moderator team will then review collectively and decide what needs to be done.
