Today CRT have removed 3 of the 4 towpath poo bins near to me, apparently to save costs. These bins were owned by CRT and emptied, presumably at a cost, by the local authority.

I anticipate the remaining bin overflowing and having to be emptied more regularly and many more people (including me) having to check their shoes for cleanliness before entering their homes. :(

Nice coal store.

A few years back CRT said they were going to remove all waste bins from towpaths, take your rubbish home, since then they have installed dozens around the Birmingham area

Almost all the bins on the canal from luddenden foot down to mirfield have been removed over the last year. The only ones remaining are council ones located nearby (and even they've started removing their own ones!) The only CRT bins remaining weirdly are two small green ones at Salterhebble (I say weird because CRT have removed all the other facilities from that spot!!)

It's been somewhat amusing because all the dog owners have left their poo bags in the same spots of the bin locations, (I guess a form of protest) and in response the CRT volunteers have put up signs stating that people should take the poo bags home because it's not fair they have to pick them up.

What I can say is along that long section of canal, dog poo not being picked up has increased substantially. Areas that were previously not that bad have become ridden with dog poo being left behind, and stepping off to moor up (or out of your boat in morning) is now always a look before you step.

If I point out that the real blame lies with irresponsible dog owners leaving sh*t everywhere rather than CART not taking it away for them, does that make me an apologist for CART? 😉

Challenged many years ago to provide a positive comment on British Waterways, I admitted that that they provided dog walkers, free of charge, with high quality poo bags ...

I remember those dispensers, there was one at Braunston opposite the Mill House pub

I remember them too ( one at Barbridge) and dog walkers took handfuls of bags to save buying them. I think BW quickly discovered that free poo bags was not a good idea 🙂

Where will people empty their compost loos now

That might well be why they have been removed.

That is also possible.

I wonder if humans ought to consider similar used food displays.

With modern LED lighting one could make it very beautiful of an evening.

Just had my new pice lists for the bin collection (we use Veolia as BIFFA became totally uncompetitive).

Each year I compare prices and Veolia are still the cheapest.

Cost of each bin

To 'empty' has increased by 15% (10% increase last year) to £15.19 (per 'empty')

Duty of Care (making sure only the right stuff is in the bins) 12% increase £4.83/month

Bin rental up to 17p/day 6% increase

Increase taxes on waste blamed for the increased 'emptying' charge. The reduced price of diesel for the last few months has been more than offset by taxes.

I guess the non-specifics are doing well out of fly tipping.

Delete the word "irresponsible" from the above and I'd agree with you. It's truly amazing how you only, ever, meet responsible dog owners - it's always all the other ones. And yet...

It seems odd that dogs are not trained in strategic defecation location techniques.

One of our lurchers was brilliant about this. She would disappear to an area where nobody normal would ever go then return having offloaded the extra weight. It was amazing. In a hedge, in a McDonalds, scrap car or whatever.

I think in reality dogs could be trained for this.

It could be a whole new industry.

Doggie poos training.

Fed up with taking bags and that warm feeling? Bring your faithfull mutt to doggie poos strategic defecation training and we'll have them crapping wherever you like. Special offer 6 sessions for the price of 8.

I know several, including my daughter. All are absolutely paranoid about picking up their dog's excrement and properly disposing of it, so they do exist. Because there are still nice people around, though you wouldn't think so going by what some of the press prints...

OTOH I've moored in paces which should change their name to Dogsh*t City, Bugsworth a few years back being a prime example. Given that there are boats there but few houses and there looked to be a large number of turds from the same dog -- presumably several deposits per day -- strongly suggest a boater was to blame... 😞

My mother used to call such areas 'dogshit alley'.

Its remarkable how concentrated it can be. Obviously horses have a tendency to use the same place.

I guess naturally dogs do similar without training so a hotspot could be caused by a small number of animals doing the same thing every day.
