Mark R Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 Having noticed a big hole in my exhaust I started to remove it with the intention of replacing it soon afterwards. I've had issues taking it apart and given life at the moment I won't get around to replacing it for a few weeks. I've just discovered my BSS runs out on 29/10. With everything else being in order, would I run in to issues with the lack of exhaust during the inspection? Mark
Quattrodave Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 I can't remember any of the BSS chaps being remotely interested in the engine exhaust 🤷♂️ TBH most of the BSS is with the view of safety to others not your self...
Lady M Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 I suggest you ask your BSS examiner as part of booking the appointment. You may get away with a warning notice.
Jen-in-Wellies Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 One requirement in the BSS is that the exhaust be covered with heat insulation. This will cover the hole! The engine isn't run in the examination. A bit naughty, but would get you through. Obviously, fix before using. 1
David Mack Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 BSS section on engine installation doesn't address this. In effect there is no requirement to have an exhaust system, only that parts liable to be touched must be insulated. But the section on ventilation, written around heating appliances, says flues and exhausts must be intact and gas tight. Can you do a temporary repair with a baked bean can, silencer paste and jubilee clips before the inspection?
Lady M Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 I found a requirement that the exhaust pipe must be supported.

And its not so much about touching but about fire risk if there should be a fuel leak 6 hours ago, Mark R said: Having noticed a big hole in my exhaust I started to remove it with the intention of replacing it soon afterwards. Arthur Marshall Posted October 24, 2024 Report Posted October 24, 2024 I thought the whole lagging exhaust thing had been dumped?
Mark R Posted October 24, 2024 Author Report Posted October 24, 2024 Cheers all, your replies are much appreciated. It sounds like I might be ok but will give him a buzz and just confirm!

That is my experience and FLAMINGO has passed several consecutive BSS examinations, with no complaint by the examiner, (hardly surprising as it was he who advised me I don't need to lag). From what Momac has pasted.... I read it that is only required in cases where the exhaust ifs not located out of harms way - a fairly unusual situation I would say. Certainly it looks like if it is beneath a deck, or surrounded by a "box", then it doesn't need to be lagged.

Mark R Posted October 31, 2024 Author Report Posted October 31, 2024 Morning all, Just a quick update. My boat passed its BSS, the exhaust wasn't an issue at all, although I did get an advisory on it. Hope this information helps some others! 3
