Hi all,

I hope posting this is allowed! Myself and a few others are working on a short (5 minute) documentary film about the canals in and around Manchester for a university project.

We’re posting here in search of potential participants. We’re looking for individuals who are currently moored in Manchester (so Castlefield, Ancoats, ect.) and would like to share their stories of living on canal boats, life on the waterways, why they decided to move onto a canal boat etc. We’d also be interested in individuals who run businesses from their boats.

We’re also looking for a historian who is familiar with the Manchester canal area.

If you’re interested, or know anyone who’s interested, please reply to this thread :)

Thanks!

Wouldn't it be better, and probably more personal, to actually go down to those moorings and speak to people and ask them if they want to take part?
And I doubt there are very many who are members here.

Maybe they’ve done both. And it’s not entirely unlikely that people on canal boats might be on a canal boat forum. 🤷‍♂️

I’ll put you down as a ‘no thank you’ though. 😂

sounds miserable but I’m getting fed up of folk pestering me in person for photos and quick interviews, usually for their vlog or college/uni project

I politely refuse,

good luck to OP though

most boaters are probably more forthcoming 👍

Hi, yes we have already been down to the moorings, just putting this on here to see if others would be interested.

Sorry that you’re fed up with people pestering you! We just want to explore Manchester’s rich canal history and this way of life.

Thanks so much!! I’ll try Martin.

Also try Cyril J Wood a boater who has written books about the Manchester canals. He is also a member of Lymm Cruising Club where he is the Club magazine editor. He also has a website called canalscape.net

Yes it seems odd to me how some people think in terms of mono-strategies, (either this or that), when all options are available and are bound to yield better results if used in parallel.

Each day I scan the towpath for people with cameras, awaiting my five minutes of fame- but they never come near.

They've prolly read your posts on here.

And therefore have no sense of humour! As any fule kno....

Best I've ever achieved is my photo in a book about living aboard. I expect the author thought I was someone else...

I was once approached to appear in a consumer type programme following my contributions to the "Barby Moorings and the Trade Descriptions Act " topic. I've only ever watched it once and that was enough. 😷

Ian Mac on here would be a good person to speak to regarding Manchester Canal History.

I can tell you about all the Robberies, Murders and thefts if you want 😆
