Carpenter required near Whixhall Marina and roof woodwork question

Featured Posts

Hi all, if the survey is all good on the boat we intend to buy it has a couple of jobs that need doing. 1st one is the roof mushrooms have had a small leak in the past that has now been fixed, but has stained the ash or oak veneer ply, is there a way to try and repair this or will we need to replace?

2nd Problem is the interior woodwork of the side hatch doors needs to be replaced so would need a good carpenter to make us some nice new ones, so does anyone know such a person near Whixhall Marina in Shropshire?

Also the wood around the cruiser stern has seen better days, will try a sanding first but if we need a new one making what would would look good for the longest or is it a matter of just sealing with Yacht Varnish.

Sorry for all the questions, the oily bits are more my thing, never ended well working with wood lol

Without photos of the staining its difficult to say if its fixable. Oxalic acid can be used to remove stains but won't work if the plywood has been varnished. If you decide to sand I think you will find the veneer is only 1mm or so and you can go through it very quickly.

Replacing will probably be tricky and unless you do the whole roof you will have none matching panels because varnish darkens over time.

Perhaps painting it in a colour of your choice is the way forward.

Replacing the wood on the side doors would be an easier job. Any competent joiner would be able to make something suitable. The existing ones might be glued on but it is possible that they are also fixed on by screws coming through from the outside.

Thanks for your reply, think painting it sounds the easy option and the wifey does like the contrast against the rest of the interior so think we can tick that box, will have to find a tame carpenter now lol
