Charliecharles Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 Hello All, I am a bit worried my boat may not be earthed properly after someone saw my wiring. Is there a sure fire way to know I'm not positively earthed? Thanks

But from your posts so far I fear you have a lot to learn. Earthing is quite a difficult concept properly to understand and why there is no simple answer.
Quattrodave Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 Buy a multi meter and learn how to use it. Are you talking about DC (battery usually 12v) earths or AC (mains 230v) earths?

I am with Mike on this, at least show us a photo of the batteries and tell us where each thick lead runs to. Very roughly, the negative should connect to one or more of the following: The engine block (metal) - any nut & bolt or similar The negative connection on the starter If you find it is the positive connection that does this, then you may have a problem, but it could be costly to alter.

It may well be, I am afraid the OP has not grasped the fact that to get sensible answers we need sensible questions with enough detail in them. I gave him the related to his thought that he may be positively earthed. In technical language that indicates a 12/24V DC source and I know that back in the day some boats were positively earthed because either they were fitted by those more used to automotive work or the fact that positive earth alternators were more readily available. I note that he has not responded in either of his questions.

Newbie posts two vaguely worded queries within minutes of each other, both with insufficient information to enable a sensible response, then doesn't reply to the follow on questions. Draw your own conclusion!

Draw your own conclusion! I think that we should give the poster a day or two to respond, even if they can't get any photos. I would not like to draw any conclusions for now, apart from the fact that this may be a very new bater with all but zero practical aptitude who has had contact with "a towpath expert" so needs help. That view will change radically if no responses are forthcoming. 2

Total newbies are sometimes taken aback by the sheer speed of replies here, and only log in a day or two later to see if anyone replied, only to find a thread three pages long with posters getting progressively crosser that the OP hasn't come back to answer the follow-on questions! 1 1

Charliecharles Posted October 7, 2024 Author Report Posted October 7, 2024 I didn't reply due to tone of the responses. If you think you represent this forum well, you need to have a word with yourself. You've chosen to waste your own time, and im glad to be part of it. Atleast youve had the joys of getting some mild arousal talking down to a 'newbie'. 2 1

Atleast youve had the joys of getting some mild arousal talking down to a 'newbie'. I didn't reply initially due to the tone of your question. Incoherent and totally lacking in any sort of detail that would be required to give any semblance of a helpful reply. And seemingly intentionally using words that could have secondary meanings just to be confusing and clever. You didn't have the courtesy to add any sort of detail when asked for it. Rude. Back to Facebook with you! I still think you are an AI bot though. Surely a human can't be that entitled? Edited October 7, 2024 by nicknorman 1 1 1
Charliecharles Posted October 7, 2024 Author Report Posted October 7, 2024 I am entitled yes, I'm entitled to not engage with faceless clever dicks, a right which I will be enjoying once again in 5...4...3...2.. 3

What a strange character..... seems to me people were willing to help ( I certainly would if I could have) but when asked to provide some basic info a tirade of abuse follows. I don't agree with Nick only a human could be so irrational.... 3
MtB Posted October 7, 2024 Report Posted October 7, 2024 AND the supposed human will have known how both helpful and rude people here can be, as it will have looked through a few posts first and still decided to ask. So it knew it's vague and poorly drafted questions would elicit requests for more info, so it could get all self-righteous and outraged. 3 1
David Mack Posted October 7, 2024 Report Posted October 7, 2024 You didn't give us much to go on. The actual question you asked was "Is there a sure fire way to know I'm not positively earthed?" There are only two possible answers to that question - "yes" and "no", neither of which would be much help. Hence the request for more information on which to base a sensible reply. This is a discussion forum and discussion is a two way process. If you decline to take your part in that process, you can hardly expect others to second guess what you really want to know.

Peanut Posted October 8, 2024 Report Posted October 8, 2024 When I read the OP's post asking about positive earthing, I thought, they might be a van-lifer, and perhaps not understand how boats are wired up. As they appeared to know no better, they thought their question made sense, now completely lost. Their subsequent response hasn't really helped them.
