Railway Stations near Canals

David Floyd

Featured Posts

Lots of railway lines run near the canals as they shared a common problem, Canal don't like hills and neither did early Railways trains, so there is a tendency to find them following similar routes.

In one of the groups on Facebook it was suggested that we should includes railway stations that are near the canals on our maps. We had used railway stations in the past as good places to meet up with people coming onboard for this very reason, so this started a new set of locations to add to the maps.

So far we have added 290 railway stations that are near enough to the canals to be useful, they have been added to the Everything Map and any other maps of individual canals, I will update the canal rings maps as I get time.

Thank you this really is helpful. It maybe a lot to ask. How difficult would it be to add bus routes/stops.

I will take a look to see what I can find, I may be able to add major bus stations?

If you zoom in far enough the bus stops are visible on the base map that you are using, e.g. at Braunston:

An alternative that Naartjie might find useful is a separate Bus Checker app that can also give route information, and real time information on when the next bus will arrive (always reassuring in remote rural locations). An example is: http://buschecker.co.uk/#download

Fine, except for the fact its on an isolated heritage railway with no connection to the national network.

Still a nice day out though.

That is I made it green.. it is also on the things to see map

If you're going to put Cheddleton on, surely you also need Froghall, which is only a short walk from the moorings before the tunnel.

Bus routes and times change too often for the information to be usefully added to a site like the OP's. Far better to use a public transport route finder like https://www.traveline.info/ or Google Maps to plan a particular journey. Both have rail and bus services so will find bus, train (including underground and tram services) and mixed mode journey options.

Not sure anything has changed with respect to gradients on railways.

Please consider adding  Brigg, Hull and Beverley and Driffield

Long Eaton is not far from the Erewash. Likewise Ilkeston. What about Beeston? Wilncote is the nearest station to Fazeley junction. There are two stations in Rugeley Trent Valley and Town. Also Lichfield. You've missed Coventry. Don't be tempted to add Polesworth - it may have a station but only one train a week stops there!! Also the three main stations in Birmingham plus others in the surrounding area.

For Heritage railways there is Loughborough Central, and Shenton Market Bosworth and Shackerstone on the Battlefield line.

Radcliffe on Trent may be near the river Trent but access to it from the river is not possible.

Many former London & North Railway routes have ruling gradients of 1:330 (16 ft per mile) but a new high speed line is akin to a motorway and will have gradients as steep as 1:40.

The momentum of a train travelling at 300kph makes this tolerable for quite long distances.

Must be a bugger if the train has to slow down stop or the wrong sort of leaves fall off the trees.
