Au contraire, and that's why I now avoid my local Waitrose. It is in "posh" Cheshire, of course, second only to Buckinghamshire in terms of its self-entitlement.

How far is it to somewhere really useful, like Screwfix?

Screwfix is 13 miles, half hour. Not too bad at all at all.

Average of 26mph in Wales !!!!!!

Reading the local news the Speed camera guys are having an all-out last effort at raising some money before the signs are changed back to 30.

Around us there are 116 spots where the Cameras have said they will be operating, and that they can detect you up to 1000mts away (if they can see you)

In July over 5000 cars were caught doing 20+ in 20 zones, whilst in June it was under 1000

I don't think it gets down as far as you, but scroll down the list.

because modern cars are so light to handle it would be easy to cause an incedent through drink driving. In days of yore when cars were a bit of a handful, noisier, most family cars had no servo brakes, no PAS, they needed a bit of a work out by the intoxicated driver which often sobered them up in time to avoid an incedent.

Indecent incedent

My car pooter says my average speed is 23 mph.

Does that include sitting overnight parked?

It's quite surprising if U look at the stuff on car pooters. I reckon a city based car average speed would be in single figures? Anyone?

Ours reckons average speed of 39mph.

But that includes a fair bit of A road driving to get too and from work. Going to the supermarket from here even is 60mph dual carriageway.

It is dependent on location isn't it. We are surrounded by small roads with no dual carriageway even for about fifteen miles. Even without the ludicrous speed limits here the average speed is low. We are going onto some motorways next week 😩

Will check what the van says next time I'm in it. Suspect that will be higher still given that pretty much every time we are out in it we are on A roads, dual carriageway or motorway for the majority of the time.

When I was on Ghigha (an island with a single track road) ,  everyone went to The Dance aka the Ceildh, on Saturday night.

Men in welly boots stood in one corner having bought one whisky from the Hotel to get a glass, topping up from their quarter bottle.

One chap got a bit mullered so they stuffed him in to his car because he would have fallen in the ditch and come to grief if he'd tried to walk home!

Where I live the residential streets were reduced from 30mph to 20mph earlier this year and the perimeter roads around the town were reduced from 40mph to 30mph. The main roads from the perimeter into town have stayed at 30 but only until about half a mile from the town centre.

It's outrageous and now takes me up to a minute longer to get into town or to the supermarket. Ok, I understand that some studies claim that anyone hit by a vehicle doing 10mph faster than these annoying new lower speed limits is far more likely to be killed or seriously injured but surely that's a small price to pay for the one minute or so that would have been saved if the bloody council hadn't meddled with our right to drive faster.

Bring back the Tories I say. They realise that our freedom to do dangerous things if we so choose is far far more important than saving a few lives here and there or saving the NHS a few quid.

Until a couple of years ago we had only a very large Tesco and a medium Waitrose in the town.

Now we also have a Lidl and an Aldi.

I've tried them all extensively and concluded that Waitrose is for people with more more money than sense. I could do my shopping there but can't help feeling I would be wasting some of the children's/ grandchildren's inheritance.

I'm happy to shop at any of the other three. Tesco offers by far the larger choice but it's so big it takes ages to get round. Aldi is the nearest to me and takes far less time as it's a lot smaller (but still a decent size). I compromise by going to Aldi 75% of the time and then go to Tesco once a month to stock up on the stuff I prefer from there (and beer when it's on offer or wine when it's 25% off 6 or more). Lidl is nearby Tesco so I pop in there as well for the stuff that Tesco over-charge for (compared to Aldi/Lidl).

Waitrose? Nah!

Can't say I've ever noticed any difference between any of them in terms of the attitudes, friendliness etc of the staff or customers. They all have a similar mix of good and bad. Just like anywhere really.

Sainsbury is the one to shop at here.

Guaranteed a quietshopping experience unlike the Asda, Tesco or Aldi.

Same driving distance to all of them but the shopping experience is so much more pleasant in Sainsbury's and the prices on a par with Asda and Tesco.

Aldi is cheaper and I do tend to do a monthly stock up of store cupboard stuff in there. Get there super early though before the masses have even considered getting out of bed 🤣🤣🤣

Yes Waitrose can be expensive overall although some things seem the same price as anywhere else. I  changed a while ago  to oat milk for my tea and its cheaper at Waitrose.

But we do shop around eg Home Bargains , B&M , Asda , M&S and Aldi.

Nowhere is cheap any more.

Apparently we are getting a new Sainsburys .

We don't have a Tesco locally.

Easier to spot a car in a ditch than a drunk chap!

We now have  a number of 20mph road zones. There is no enforcement, and other than learner drivers,  almost everyone, including the local buses, continues to observe the old 30 mph speed limit. My local.councillor said  it cost around £15,000 to do our road and the adjoining one, around 3/4 mile in total, and traffic monitoring prior to its introduction gave an average speed of around 23mph.

Was it to replace or add to your existing extingishers?

Addition of course, there is a problem getting rid of the old ones,

I have now got eight fire  extinguishers, two CO monitors and four smoke alarms, overkill methinks!

Not to mention two life jackets, two liferings  a rescue throw line, and more than adequate ground tackle.

First aid kit suitable for an expedition up Ben Nevis with a party of boy scouts, and a pair of crutches!

And who says narrowboat living requires serious pruning of assets?

Going back to the original subject, someone's probably already mentioned this but when I bought my first narrow boat 25 years ago two old blokes in their late 70s living on a pair of traditional working boats at Batchworth on the GU, told me that it was very common for the old working boatmen to get into fights at locks when they both turned up at the same time and disagreed about whose lock it was.

So in that sense the canals were never a peaceful haven and the angry impatient boaters of today are simply continuing in the tradition!

I think that contrary to the popular belief that everything's getting worse, many things today are far better than they used to be.
