I log my hours for propulsion and electric in a log book.

We tick over every where, just done the Leicester ring in tick over, so 800rpm when cruising, 800rpm when idling. So its pretty accurate the say it uses the same fuel either way.

But due to being a programmer with multiple screens, the hot water which is only heated via the engine and everything being 240v.

I find our diesel use is more like 30 propulsion 70 domestic. So I am essentially paying tax on 30% more than I should.

Is anyone else declaring accurate diesel usage rather than saying 60:40 everywhere?

It seems the previous owner which did a refit was marina based so they designed the boat to their needs, full time marina, weekend cruiser. We are currently in the process of slowly replacing each appliance with 12v alternatives. For example our tv is a 120watt 240v TV!

You can legally claim what you consider to be your actual (future) usage.

BUT

Sellers are under no obligation to give you any split you ask for as it makes the maths more difficult and some (many) will just say its 60/40 take it or leave it.

See the other active thread which may help too.

It’s a bit puzzling why  you are only navigating on tickover though? It may cause difficulties with others who will need to travel at greater rpm and probably speed to charge their batteries. You must be forever letting boats past, looking behind or not letting boaters by who may not then be too happy?

not good for any engine either is it?

it’ll never get good and hot, and never blow out the filth that’ll build up.

why don’t OP claim 0% on the next few fill ups til they think they’ve got the money back? 😃👍

Point of Order...

No it isn't. Not necessarily.

The engine speed does not govern the fuel consumption. Fuel consumption is governed by the work the engine is doing. The speed governor controls the speed by injecting as much fuel as is necessary to maintain the engine speed you set on the speed control. In the load deminishes, say as the batteries approach fully charged, then the engine speed will remain the same but the fuel consumption will reduce in proportion to the reducing power being delivered by the alternator.

You can declare whatever split you like. However not all retailers will accept that, some only work on 60/40 split.

We always declared 100% domestic. The only place that we found that didn't accept this was Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club.

In the winter I claim 10/90 I dont have gas so cooking and heating in the winter is all on Diesel and use far more on heating than running the engine for 2 to 3 hours a day

For convenience I keep a 20L Jerry can to top up my tank, I get it filled whenever I pass anywhere easy to pull over to.

Point being: when I present the can for a refill I never get asked about a split and I’m pretty sure they charge me 0% duty.
I’m never asked me boat number or any details.
Only one place on the River Lee refused to fill my can
So why’s that then? Why they never ask?

If I may ask, what diesel cooker do you use? It would give a gas free boat, but some are on the pricey side. By report, they take a while to heat up, and not so good in summer.

We buy red from a supplier most the time (so it's tax free entirely and cheaper than marinas) but the few times we've been to a marina and they've asked, we just say 10 prop and 90 domestic. I would say 100 domestic but they always quibble so 10 keeps them happy (okay, not happy, they grumble but accept it).

We've been challenged twice at one particular marina but they've done it both times. Probably because they fill the tank before taking payment so if they want the money it's a tad late to argue!

I sort have the reverse of that. I often buy red from my local petrol station as they have a pump for it. They wont sell it if its for lnland boating, but as I legitimately need it for a tractor and a generator they are happy for me to fill my drums. They are close to the Lancaster canal and guess they can't be arsed with declarations and split and all that. I notice they sell much less now that plant can't use Red. (Legally)

Don’t get me wrong I’m not complaining 😃,

I’ll ask next time,

thought it might be a case of:

diesel going in boat then a split should be declared,

diesel in a can no split needed

🤷‍♀️

I remember using a yard a long while back,

“shouldn’t I be signing something” I asked.

“why? It’s all domestic ain’t it?” they said.
“well…yea” I said.
Why would anyone be daft enough to declare anything other than 0% seemed to be their view.

One boatyard I filled up at had all the declarations in a ring binder on the counter. Flicking back through previous customers I saw that most had declared 0% propulsion with a few at 10%. I don't think the yard had very many residential moorings!

I think Horne Basin charges extra into cans

Dickinson. Not the same as a gas cooker but she wouldn't have one. end of story. We also use an induction hob, slow cooker, mini oven, Bread maker , coffee machine . I finally got rid of the toaster as it was only used for guests for breakfast and we don't have guests now.

I pulled into a marina last year for diesel and asked if I needed to fill out a declaration. "Yes" he said "but just sign it Donald Duck". "How do you know my name", I says

My old boss when I was an apprentice would often sign his name as Queen Victoria. He is over the hill and long gone now but I had some laughs with him

Thanks, I had been recomended a Dickinson Pacific, but £2k plus fitting I think a bit much for now. Good in winter though, and not a lot to go wrong.
