Had a spendid stay for a few days at Diglis, moored here ///brain.pill.baird on the only length near to the water points which doesn't have MAX STAY 2HRS on the towpath tarmac.

When we got back after lunch after the morning concert at the Three Choirs Festival we found one of our windows had been broken by, probably, an air gun pellet from across the canal.  I've reported it to the police on the 101 web site.

Now I need a) to jury rig a temporary window.  (All suggestions gratefully received.) and b) sort out a proper repair.  ISTM that the bus window will need to be replaced in its entirety.  I can't see how a new glass could be fitted but would love to be corrected on this.

All hints and suggestions gratefully received.

Sorry you've suffered this. Seems a rather busy and overlooked area for someone to pull an air rifle out without drawing a lot of attention to themselves. Might have been a catapult though. Any sign of pellets/ball bearing in the boat?

Posted

There has nearly always been someone on one of the moored boats opposite when we have stopped there so always felt it a safe area to leave the boat.

So sorry to read about this happening to you.

I've seen a few shop windows temporarily made safe with some sort of sticky backed clear plastic film. So maybe some Blue Peter style sticky backed plastic would support the window till you can sort out a replacement/repair.

Nick, give me the window dimensions and bottom corner arc radius, and I will see if we have a matching spare for you.

(I'm not back until Aug 11th, so in the meantime, get 2x 6mm piece of ply that fit the internal frame surround size, and screw outside to inside.)

Sadly it does look like an air rifle shot. It could have been an air pistol, so not as noticeable especially from a window in flats opposite. Wide clear sticky back plastic in both directions should keep it in place.

We used to moor for several years just round the corner in Diglis basin . Never got shot but did get burgled twice.

What a shame after a nice day out. Hope you are OK.

We were going to moor there a few weeks ago, but were warned by a moorer opposite that this had happened before. The glass should be replaceable, getting the frame out may be the hard part.

That is the big probem with W3W - get a letter wrong. or relying on pronunciation (if on the phone) means the air ambulabce could end up 100s of miles away - as happened to a sailboarder in Ireland.

What is wrong with lat/long, or grid references ?

The former part is deliberate - W3W designed a protocol which cannot be reverse engineered but (for now, and if you need small volume) they provide free of charge... The company may (and have done) introduce "licencing" for volume users such as Amazon delivery.

Our local council asked for reports of illegal parking using W3W - I'm still arguing the toss on "What's wrong with 'outside No 43'"

Nasty.

I see to recall reading a story recently that catapults were becoming fashionable with the kids.

We always had Black Widow and Diablo catapults as teenagers. I used to buy lead from the scrapyard then melt it down and mould shot in the smaller of the sockets in my 3/8 socket set. you get a nice hexagonal lead projectile. Very effective.

I shot a flying pigeon once but never anyone's residential windows or Boats.

I also did quite a lot with various air rifles. I personally think that this incident is a catapult with a 10mm ball.

I think a pellet is a bit small to carry that much energy into a window from a distance unless it is a very powerful rifle. My medium power air pistol would not do that.

There are lots of youtube videos about unconventional and very effective catapult systems which people may well be making at home. Some of them question the legality of catapults themselves because they are remarkably powerful and accurate.

You have to remove the frame from the cabin side. Then it can be taken apart to replace the glass. That is, assuming you can undo the screws holding it together!

You may be able to source a replacement glass from the window manufacturer (if you know who made it and they are still trading). The bottom corner curve radius varies between manufacturers so one from another may not fit. Otherwise a glass merchant could cut a replacement and get it toughened. They will probably need a plywood/cardboard template, and toughening will take a few days as it will need to be sent off for this.

I had a very similar problem when a break in occurred on our boat. The frame does need to be removed. Take out the top piece of glass. Remove the screws/rivets holding the horizontal bar in. Remove all the broken glass. cover the window hole with plywood/ plastic

I measured the rectangular shape the glass needed to be and cut a cardboard template to the shape of the radius corners. Kidderminster glass then cut a piece of glass to the required shape and  had it toughened.

New butyl rubber tape to seal around the window and reinstall.

Alternatively a sheet of acrylic or polycarbonate (much better) can be cut to shape yourself allowing an immediate reinstatement of the window.

PS Kidderminster Glass would have done the whole repair, but the diy approach was a lot cheaper

It would be wise for the police to fit a security camera there as someone could get badly injured at this rate whatever te implement is it’s likely to happen again 😕

In terms of a temporary repair, if the shattered glass is holding together then the simplest way is a union jack pattern of 50mm wide masking tape or duct tape over the whole window which should prevent it moving and falling in. I'd tape both inside & outside and of course tape over the hole.

Hi, Matty

I've sent you a PM with all the details and a pic.

Would it be permissible to replace it with a polycarbonate or laminated glass

I suspect Belfast has had a laminated glass replacement in the past as one of the windows has a whitish 'bloom' an inch or so in from the edge, which is definitely not on the outside or inside face of the glass, so I suspect some water has got in through the cut edge.

Nick, Sorry to read this, its a shame as the concert was quite good. We did spot your permanent mooring as we went past it. We made it to the top of Tardebigge at about 1pm yesterday having left Worcester at 4.30 on Thursday. It cost just under £90 for 4 nights mooring in the marina.,
