Will there is no rule but there are some water points which now having a 30 min or a 1/2 hour mooring sign

And you can bet your life they are the slowest taps going.

( It was a seventy foot Dutch Barge )

Is that a rule you've made up yourself? I might start doing that for other things...

  • The 15 minute lock rule: Get though in 15 mins otherwise I start opening paddles and gates to force you out of the lock via whichever end is quickest.
  • The 24 hour "I like that visitor mooring too" rule: Move on from that desirable visitor mooring within 24 hours of me seeing it or I set your boat adrift in the night.
  • The 2 minute elsan rule: Get out of my way when I want to use the elsan point or I dump my cassette all over your feet.

Do you actually have any right to disconnect someone else's hose just because they've exceeded some arbitrary time frame that you have in your mind? Of course they didn't like it - you have no right to do it.

Does that rule apply at Barrowford top lock services/water point?

Just asking ...

The tap at Braunston (by the Stop House) has a 30 min sign on it. It is also quite a slow tap.

It's irritating when people leave boats on the water tap to go shopping, but a "water tap use only" rule would be much more sensible than a time limit.

I've just breasted up to one who did that and ran my hose over his fore deck, and pulled his hose off the tap until I'd finished.

Filled up with water today, and this thread made me look at the new “Boaters’ Facilities” sign, and sure enough it said 30 min max stay.  South Stratford top of the flight coming out of Stratford.  Good pressure, tank filled up and cassettes emptied and gone well within the time allowed.

Bit like formula 1 then. New set of fenders fitted and a full tank of diesel as well. 😁

I didn't think there was anyone on board, I'd tapped on the roof, and they had been on it for over an hour.

I thought that there was a one hour advisory, certainly seen quite a few notices.

I like your style LadyG, but remember there are some twits out there who like and invite confrontation so be very careful. (I’m sure you’re aware, but still, take care)

Stopped for water today at Ellesmere. The pressure was up to Hebden Bridge standards so exceeded 30 minutes. Is this face bovvered?

Surely the point of the 30 minutes max rule is to make it obvious you can't leave the boat there and go shopping or have a leisurely lunch on board. Every rule will have ways in which people can wilfully misinterprete it. "Boat must not be left unattended" - crew has a five course dinner on board. "Water point only" - operate all those thirsty appliances whilst on the water point and stay six hours... "30 minutes" - time to give someone else a go

Yes but...

If its a slow tap and our tank is low it can take a while to fill, but if a hire boat turns up and is in a rush we will invite them alongside and lend them our hose. Hire boats are usually topping up an almosy full tank anyway....(why don't the hire compaines give them a meter, they only cost a bit over £100?????)

Its just much easier to stop at one tap and fill up than having to stop at 2 or 3 for a half hour at each 😀

and then there is Hebden Bridge, stop at the services, put the hose in, go for a few pints in Nightjar, come home and decide to stop there all night 😀

Can I thank you for helping holiday boats

we have hired for about 12 or so years  .every year the hiring company has said fill with water when you see a tap

^^^This^^^

Its only started happening the last few years but I've encountered this several times recently. last time was at the tap at Marston Doldrums. An expensive-looking boat moored on the water tap and a table in the bow laid out nicely for lunch, wine glasses, the lot with a bunch of upper-middle class twits sitting out having a leisurely lunch. When challenged that I wanted to use the tap their response was something like 'Oh no not another one, you're about the fifth so far. Where else are we supposed to moor for lunch, this is the only space."

And annoyingly they were right. And as I'm not one for allowing massive confrontations to spoil things when out enjoying myself boating, I just cruised on. It was not that big a deal. Just irritating at the entitled attitude.

I had a similar experience at the BCLM a few weeks ago. I was moored up on the museum side, intending to wind and pick up some water from the other side before heading off, as I was heading to Bradley for the weekend and the tank was fairly empty. A nice (expensive) modern boat turned up, winded and stopped on the water point. OK, I thought, perfectly reasonable, they will fill up and then move down the space further forward near the bridge, but no, they just moored up for the night on the water point (after having let their dogs defecate on the grass).

I considered various options, including trying to moor right in behind them to reach the tap (brick edge and no rings so would be just the single rope pulling up on the same ring as them, wedging against their stern), or mooring alongside and running the hose across their bows, but that would have been difficult as they had a fully enclosed well deck and very short bow deck. I considered going and discussing the fact that they were moored on a water point, and that if they had instead moored two boats down when they first arrived they could have moored inside the museum with no problems, and that their decision not to do so did not now give them the right to stay where they were, particularly since there is a perfectly good set of rings just outside the museum under the bridge (where in fact I had spent the previous night as it was busy when I arrived). In the end though I just thought 'how selfish' and carried the bottles round to fill them, relying on finding a tap at Bradley for drinking water.

Just asking ...

Is that the one I almost moored on one night, when i say almost, there was enough room for a 56.75 fter in front of me, if I lifted my bow fender!

Surely you just fill with water and move on ?

It takes as long as it takes ... but simple courtesy suggests you don't take showers, or do laundry, or hose the boat down if someone is waiting.

We have a rule never to pass a tap, so we're rarely longer than fifteen minutes anywhere.

If waiting your turn for services is a problem you should get up earlier 😁

Well one would think so but increasingly, that is not happening.

Hence the need for the "30 minute MAX" signs.

No, it's the one where you had a broken rudder.  I seem to recall you were there for a little bit longer than half an hour! 😁

Yes, of course, that was a four month overstay as I recall,  of course some grand chaps had bowhauled me there. Then Judith and Pete took pity and towed me through the tunnel, or I'd still be there!

I guess the reduction to 39 minutes now is "shrinkflation". 🤣

I think you might be mixing up sanitary stations with drinking water taps!
