I'm a serial hirer, and many of the volunteers at Marsworth have owned, shared or hired boats.

Regardless of any actual experience all new volunteers have to complete 20 hours accompanied by someone who is already trained. Once the 20 hours has been done there is then an assessment comprising a written test, followed by actually working a boat up and down a lock (not the same boat 🙂).

We are all told to always ask if a boater wants any assistance.

That’s great. It has always been thus in theory, but in the past I think the “ask if boater wants assistance” was downplayed and mostly ignored. As has been said, this seems to have got better recently - as in this year. Lots of people like assistance. Lots of people don’t like assistance! So by asking, everyone is happy!

He hasn't blogged for ages as far as I know. He did Twitter quite a lot but don't know if he still does now E Musk has killed the site.

He said that he has stepped back from blog etc as his time is busy. He runs a hotel boat, often think single handed and I think is very committed to maintaining his standard of holiday for his guests. But he does miss  the chances for personal social interactions.
