D “Dusty” Miller canal artist painting

Featured Posts

I was pleased to have bought this original painting the other day at a local auction. Listed as an oil painting by K Miller of a barge.

I believe Dusty is still around. I think he had a stall at the Braunston rally the other day. At that time I hadn’t collected the painting so hadn’t realised he was the artist. I certainly didn’t realise he also was a boat painter.

This was painted in 1993,  30+ years ago so he has been painting a long time

It’s strange the listing miscatalogued the name. It’s on the back along with title “Down the bottom road”

The signature could look like a K perhaps

I wonder if he keeps a record of his paintings and if anyone knows what the prize was for? It’s quite a good prize to have been donated presumably by Dusty himself? Anyone able to place where it was painted or is it artistic licence?

Does anyone else have any of his art work?

Dusty is very approachable.

He will also tell you where he has used artist's licence.

For example our boat FLAMINGO features paired with BRIGHTON on one of his paintings set at Hawkesbury.  He has changed the family aboard to one he knew, and added a dog.

Also he has introduced a pair of boats threading it's way between the rows of breasted boats moored on each side of the canal, to make the picture more interesting than if it was just the water.

The photograph on which Dusty's painting is based is freely available, so it is very easy to see what in the painting is fact, and what has stemmed from his imagination.

We do have his print of FLAMINGO on the walls inside FLAMINGO.

Another thing learnt today, The bottom Road. Here is a thread on it, with several of you posting on that too. Many thanks all. Brian’s right it definitely looks like Curdworth Lock 7. I’ve messaged Dusty. Incidentally anyone able to identify the boat?

One of our regular moorings on the way home from Birmingham, a bit quieter from the motorway below that lock

I first came across the term "the bottom road" when reading the "idle women" series of books in the 1980's.

Apparently oily, dirty and difficult from memory of the written word.
