Mooring in Ripon

Featured Replies

I'm in 57ft narrow boat; heading for Ripon.

Is there any 2 week towpath mooring on the short Ripon Canal ?

Failing that what are the alternate options ?

I am currently up the Ripon Canal but have gone in to the marina as I have reciprocal rights via my Aquavista mooring elsewhere. However, on the canal itself all I have found are the (very) few 48hr moorings. Away from those moorings the water looks far too shallow to moor against the bank (the water is pretty clear so you can see how shallow it is).

There's good moorings in the basin for narrowboats and one other at the sanitary station basin. The marina is the better option if you want to stay for more than a few days.

I just remembered a few years ago a friend came by boat and asked Julie the lockie where he could stay for two weeks. She told him to moor on the towpath just above the top lock. There's also a short wooden jetty just through the bridge by the boat club and some people have moored on the left after Bell Furrows lock.

That one's a marked 48hr mooring.

Has that recently changed?  When we went to Ripon in 2018, there was no mooring allowed in the basin with the visitor mooring being on the approach to the basin next to a busy road.

That's near enough to be the basin. It's a good mooring but only two days and 'policed' by the curtain twitcher in the house across the canal.

In which case CRT will definitely chuck you off after a year or two.

Not with the super-efficient lockie (if she's still there) who took me to task for leaving my boat for a few days in what I thought was a perfectly innocuous place, in no-ones way, on the offside before the marina.  I later got back in her good books by facilitating the removal of a fallen tree at Boroughbridge by using my boat for the chainsaw gang.

Well its pleasing to hear there is some enforcement going on in at least one place on the system. Here on the eastern K&A there has been none since Covid and piss-taking has been rife. I grant that the four boats that spent two years between them on the 48hr VMs here have now gone so maybe CRT finally noticed and sent an email or two...

Not really much need for enforcement in Ripon, when we were there we were the only boat and not sure if we saw any other boats moving on canal bit.  Whilst I have been to Ripon by car a number of times, I found visiting by boat an anticlimax given the amount of time and effort it takes to get there, but it is the end, so it has to be done.  One of the best kept services block on the system though.

Given all the trouble getting there and the few boats that do, 48 hours is a stupid restriction when there is so much in the area to see and do.

We actually stayed 72 hours and nothing happened.

Spent 3 months in 2018/19 on the canal. Granted  it was on the lovely campsite moorings untill the owners son's widebeam arrived 😁
