Interrupting the bbc

Featured Posts

So I happened to be cruising up Oxford canal and arrived at bridge 221 Aubrey's lift bridge (Thrupp services).

A nice friendly boater grabbed my key and opened the bridge for me noticing I was solo.

Other side of the bridge there's a gaggle of people, a cameraman and lots of pointing up the left hand bit of the 90' turn.

Turns out some local representative was on a pedallo bike surrounded by canoeists doing some spot to promote himself on the beeb.

I get approached by some woman stating " did I not know there was an event going on?"

You can imagine my private thoughts right that second although I politely stated "no".

I then get asked to stop and switch off whilst they finish filming, which being polite I do.

Now the wind is broadside to me, I don't have a bow thruster and I'm alongside the right-hand wall next to the service point.

The canoeists all park in front of me and around the corner not realising I need the space they've  taken to attempt to get out of a wind trapped basin trying to turn left without a bow thruster.

"Oh can you not go round us?" Comes the comment.

I bite my tongue and growl out loud " I'm 16t, solid steel and can only steer when moving"

Yeh they moved out the way eventually.

Moral of this story, don't stop for MP's run the buggers down 😁

Its stuff like this that makes boating endless fun!!

Presumably you are also unaware that Somerton Deep lock just ahead of you is closed UFN?

Yep was aware, moored up in a nice spot with poor internet and just hung the washing out.

I need to do a few basics so can sit here watching the world slowly turn as just filled the fridge too.

Burgers and cider anyone? 😋

Any idea who, or what, was being filmed?

Nope, just some bloke on a floating pedal bike wearing a wetsuit in front of the cameras.

No idea what or why, BBC were filming it tho.

Surely it was  Sir Ed Davey…

Tbh I wouldn't know if it was sir Donald Duck or Rishi Sunak for that matter.

I am totally disinterested in such matters or people, I just know he got in the way and I was asked not to mow him down 🤣

A chunk of my childhood is peppered with incidents like this from the filmings of Last/First of the Summer Wine. :(

Now that I bet was interesting, I just had the gravel pits where doctor who, the goodies and tenko were filmed.

Goodies rip off of close encounters was a blast to watch being filmed.

You were absolutely correct, something to do with water quality and how places like the Thames he wouldn't want to fall into.

And the usual party political promotions of course 🥱

I think I'd far rather fall into the Thames than into quite a few he canals on the system, from a water quality point of view!

It's in all sorts of daily rags, just type "Sir ED Davey back on the water" into any decent search engine to find the story.

No videos so far just a few pics on his floating bike as he pulled right in front of me 🙊

Why?

The only party explicitly offering support for small businesses, instead of using them as a resource to be plundered.

You actually believe them???

I certainly don't believe team Starmer/Reeves when they say they won't put up my taxes. I'm expecting substantial tax rises once they get their feet under the table.

And farridge's entirely uncosted promises won't?

Goodness you would have hoped that Ed Davey and the local parliamentary candidate would know the difference between the river Cherwell and the Oxford canal. I guess there is some of the fresh Cherwell water still in Thrupp but he missed out on the river!

Lazy journo heading “paddling on the River Cherwell at Thrupp” too.

I watched the video (at double speed) and I'm still not sure what actually happened!

Sir Ed and crew were to the left of me spread across the canal blocking the waterway, they then all pulled in front and stayed there.

A very polite lady came straight over to me asking "was I not aware of an event going on and could I pull over as both the BBC and channel 4 were filming".

I'd not seen any CRT email notification although it had only been switched on for the Oxford canal for three days so politely replied "no, I wasn't aware".

I stopped as " local MP sliced and diced by mad canal boat owner" probably wouldn't have made good headlines.

Getting out was dire, gusting broadside wind, small floaty peeps not wanting to move and no bow thruster was certainly interesting.
