I would be investigating the lift pump.

If there is a head of fuel above this and it is a mechanical lever operated pump there may be a route for Diesel to  get into the sump.

Not familiar with this particular unit but this is definitely a route in some designs

I agree, unless it is a remote electric pump, but I think the Isuzu ones may fit into the engine.

I have a feeling Isuzu may use an electric pump on some of their engines, but the inlet and outlet pump valves in either anelectric or mechanical pump should pass fuel in the normal direction, given a high enough head. The valve springs are pretty flimsy, and some pumps seem to use a flimsy plastic/rubber flap with no spring.

I have edited as the OP says electric pump.

I meant the route to sump via the lever.

But, from memory, it MIGHT be fitted into the same "hole" as a mechanical one, but it may simply be bolted onto the block. In that case, it is not likely to be the cause.

ETA read first post !

If it was a Triumph Herald I would agree with you. The pump use to fail and petrol got in the sump but in this case it has an electric lift pump completely separated from the mechanical side of the engine. Cheers Graham

This is correct, it is isolated from the main engine fitted on a flange that sticks out.

Hi,

my Isuzu 4LC38 did this some years ago at about 10,000 hours..

I had the four separate injection pumps and the injectors serviced.

That cured the problem.

Whist at it I checked the glow plugs and replaced 2 of them.

After that the engine started better and ran a lot smoother.

Thanks for that, I will check the glow plugs while I have it all apart. Plan is still injectors first and pumps second.

Injectors back from Barry Peck in Warwick. He says d they were very dirty so possibly not sealing properly. I have carried out an experiment and discovered that the bleed off line will siphon fuel from the tank back to the injectors.

Injectors fitted and engine started. It has never idled as smoothly as it does now.

Fingers crossed - monitor the oil level. I am going to record the level on the dipstick over time.

With a bit of luck this may be my last post on this subject. Well until you all ask me things!

Even if it doesn't cure it and lets hope it does, at least some good will have come out of it .
