Is there catch up on yesterday TV?

They got his name spelt correctly with no “s” but on the link  it is incorrect as it won’t accommodate the apostrophe🤣

Yes, as Ian said UKTV Play.

On the computer you do have to register, not sure if you do on Freeview.

Another new series started this week.

Is it only us, but is he not good at learning from his mistakes?

I've not seen any of this series yet, but we do enjoy watching his shows. I've come to the conclusion that many of the situations he finds himself in are contrived for content as like you say, he never seems to learn from any previous situations, and surely nobody can have THAT much bad luck.

That's not my interpretation; he's not exactly the most knowledgeable boater as he freely admits, especially anything technical to do with the boat, he does seem to cruise with fenders down a lot (even in narrow locks?) which is not a good idea, but at least when things go wrong he doesn't over-dramatise them with "OMG!!! WE NEARLY DIED!!!" like some other clickbait-posters do. I think he gives a realistic warts-and-all picture of what it's like to live on the canals as a singlehanded CCer, including the problems that this leads to -- as well as the joys of canal life.

As for bad luck, there's at least one poster on CWDF who seems to have had *far* worse than Robbie -- but at least admits to it, there may well be others who don't want to admit this because of the opprobium that the CWDF "expert boaters squad" would heap onto their heads... 😉

I don't disagree with you, but how many times have you had to get in the canal?

I've been in once in 13 years of boating, and that includes 3 years running a fuel boat. Robbie seems to feel the need to get in once an episode for one reason or another. Even my missus makes comment that she doesn't think he really needs to and thinks he does it for the cameras. He's also constantly down the weed hatch.

I think the problem is that boating is usually pretty dull. Not much happens on any trip, so anything like a venture down the weed hatch, getting rocked by a speeding boat or getting in the water is worth a few minutes of film. Just pottering along isn't really very cinematic.

Yeah that was my take on it pretty much. I don't think it spoils the overall problem and probably has some benefit actually as it shows people considering coming onto the canals that it's not all Rosie & Jim.

We have been in the canal 3 times in 5 years. To get a dog out! Retrievers love water but if you you lose your guard, they will jump in. In the nesting season it is imperative to keep them out but so far, no birds have been damaged and our older dog has tail droop through swimming too long. Stubborn so and so.

But I do enjoy the series and look forward to this one. The joy of the canals are as much about the people you meet.

Well Robbie now has a new bilge pump, repaired wiring, emptied engine sump, and a repaired brass stern greaser which he had somehow almost destroyed the threaded end of.

So sinking shouldnt appear in this series.

Methinks you're exaggerating... 😉

Maybe he's constantly down the weed hatch because his boat is more prone than some to picking up debris? I've seen big differences between boats for this, but of course it also depends where you are... 😉

He was at the Historic boat rally end of last June moored in the marina.  His boat went off shortly afterwards so as Rob suggests last July time onwards?

Yes, confirmed by volly at Claydon. Something in one episode suggests a guess at this. It is said that it took hour and half to film the few seconds of the piece about the numbers and message board!

This wouldn't come as any surprise to anyone who has ever had had anything to do with film/programme making, ... 😉

That's about right. Takes me at least fifteen hours to do a three minute music video, not counting recording time.

Last time I bumped into him, there was Robbie on the boat, one person setting the lock, one filming and one doing the drone. They held up the lock flight for 4 hours because of filming and non of the staged bits or much of the flight passage was included in the final TV episode. So he wasted a lot of CaRTs time and held boats up for no reason really. Everyone on the flight and the boaters weren’t bothered on the day, as they were happy the flight was going to be shown, however it was a bit disappointing that so little was shown for so much time taken.

But it makes a bit more interesting viewing for the general public, than the majority of the boater Vlogs on YouTube.

Interesting watching the episode where he meets Timothy Spall on the Thames...... what is it with boating and Timothy's? :)

Basically how he ended up hard aground and had to wade ashore in the Perry Barr flight. They were filming him down the weed hatch floating about while the pound was draining.

Robbie came up the Basingstoke Canal last autumn. I was a bit disapointed, as a long term Basingstoke canal boater, that the view given in the program was the canal was difficult and shallow.

Yes there is some weed and a bit of floating pennywort but on the whole it is well maintained any easy to navigate. We have used the canal over many years with deep drafted boats and seldom had any serious problems and it is true that you have to book the locks but in practice we designed the lock open times many years ago to make it work for visiting boats. Please don't be put off from visiting our lovely canal. For those of us with long memories of canal boating in the seventies nothing is really difficult now.

Just watching the first episode, as he goes under bridge 144 (could have been 114) it looks like a kingfisher darts into view and back again.
