Boat Safety Certificate

I have often wondered how some of the extremely poor condition boats manage. There are a couple on CRT online moorings near me that look like they couldn't possibly pass a BSS. How do they get licenced?

How do you know they are licenced?

I don't. But I'm assuming they must be as dems da rools. To add: I appreciate a boat doesn't need to look smart to pass a boat safety inspection but I'm sure we've all seen the sorts of boats I'm referring to.

What do you think about this one ?

Meet the man who has 25 years to pull his PIANO on a BOAT from Liverpool to London

A FORMER university lecturer has been pulling his own boat along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal for the past five years as part of an epic journey to reach London by the year 2037.

The craft is made of items including wooden planks, freezer doors, disused drawers and is kept afloat by a dozen 55-gallon industry standard blue plastic barrels.

Yes that's a beauty! And I guess has insurance and a boat safety cert. What a character - good on him. And a proper CCer too 😄

He does.  A trading licence last time I spoke to him.

We do like Ben.  He's nuts, but in a good way!

He wanted to CC more than CRT would let him.  Taking an unpowered raft like that through River Lock onto the River Aire was firmly stopped by CRT.

I'm guessing he wasn't aware of the weirs on the river...

  • 3 months later...

Only recently realised my bss is several months expired. im currently on the T&M near Stone. I will need to get a certificate before I can relicence. Will the 4 years start from the expiry of the old one or the date of examination?

I've been quoted 230 quid which feels high, can anyone suggest a cheaper examiner? Something like @peterboat's 180 would be nice???

But as long as you have the new one by the time the licence renewal comes up you will be fine.

It occurred to me to leave my BSS expired until just before the next license would be required . But my insurance requires compliance with local regulations so an expired BSS  would technically give insurers a way out of paying a claim.

Micheal Shaw charged me £180 earlier this year.
And he came to Stone.
Doesn’t charge any travelling fee

And doesn’t charge if you need a retest.
But double check that if you use him.

I think he’s half hour or 40 min drive away.

This is where I was going with it, but it doesn't really save you much because you have to be BSSed at the time of getting licenced, and since the bss is exactly 4 years and the licence is exactly 1 year, you can get a few "free" (uninsured) months the first time, but you will have to re-BSS directly before getting your licence in 4 years time, so you can only do that once.

CRT seem to check BSS and insurance expiry dates now when you try to book any passages on line such as Frankton locks etc and will not allow you to make the booking if out of date. I recall someone else being refused a booking by telephone as their insurance date on the CRT records had not been updated.

That's true although you don't necessarily have to buy a 12 month license. 😁

I don't know if CRT benefit financially from the BSS system, but it has always seemed like a bit of a gravy train to me for little benefit to the boat owner. After all, lumpy water boaters, of which there are many, seem to cope very well in potentially a much more dangerous environment without one.

I suppose that 3rd party cover such as basic boat wouldn't be affected if one let ones BSS lapse.

I expect it could be a reason for insurers to decline a claim or to pay out and  seek a recovery from you
