I went on a Hurtigruten cruise back in 1997. All the way from Bergen to the very north of Norway, nearly to Russia at Kirkeness and back to Bergen in 11 nights. It wasn't a proper "cruise", more of a glorified ferry. The food was nice though. It stopped at many towns and villages on the way to deliver the mail as well as stopping at the major places (Trondhiem, Tromso, Hammerfest etc.) for a few hours. They would announce the exact time they were going to cross open sea between fjords and islands and explain that today it might be a bit rough between 1600 and 1625 but the rest of the time sailing on fjords it was smooth. It was a most enjoyable holiday. I suspect it has gone a bit upmarket now.

I think I'd have preferred the Hurtigruten experience myself, I could pretend we were 'travellers' not 'tourists'.  Or as Mrs Tiger puts it, 'you'd have liked that when you were alive', as she booked P&O for my 66th birthday as the pension comes in.

Times have changed, and these days I notice defibrillators, and the full onboard medical team.

But, this is our second attempt to see the northern lights, after a freezing, dark 10 days in Iceland 10 years ago proved fruitless. Hopefully the clouds and sheeting ran will miraculously part at the appointed time.

Anyway - the storm is tearing a hole in Scotland with some awful floods and frankly our OAP holiday isn't significant.

Keep away from all the orange ladies...... never seen so many than in blackpool... they will probably look a bit streaky in the rain.

I will keep a look out, we are taking the grandaughter to see the lights next week.

The northern lights are amazing, seen em umpteen times off Iceland and in the barents sea. It will be a bit choppy up there at the moment lol, used to love it when it was proper rough up there. Scotland and North England is getting a bit of a bashing at present yet there is bugger all thankfuly over ere in west Wales, which is good as I have a 200 yard walk tut pub in a few minutes.

Not my pictures.

CaRT navigation notice came through today that the new flood gate above Rotherham lock has been closed in anticipation. First time I've seen one of those, so they are expecting something.

BBC article about it being officially opened last November, which is weird, 'cause a flood gate coming in to use should have an official closing...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-63639694

@peterboat and other moorers at Tulley's and Eastwood should sleep a little easier.

Not really Jen, by the time water starts going over the gates at Rotherham the river has broken its banks opposite myself and is flooding the canal and the railway tracks, via the drains from the tracks which go under the canal into the river. These flood defences will just flood Icles and the town even worse than Normal unfortunately :(

Fortunately the river is low currently and my boat is very low as well, if it floods I will take pictures for perusal on here

Quite worried here in West Yorkshire.  The EA flood prediction for the Calder at Hebden Bridge was 4.5m this afternoon. Last time our Club was flooded the Calder at Hebden Bridge peaked at 3.35m. Predictions are usually overstated but if it get anywhere near it could be serious for boats moored along the Calder.

This may be of help to someone

Have a plan B, with an escape route.

The previous highest recorded level at Sheffield Ladys Bridge was 4.471

This is tommorow afternoons prediction.

Flood alerts have also been issued by the government for Nottinghamshire in relation to five more areas. While not all of them are located in the county, the government deems them to be in a close enough proximity to affect Nottinghamshire.

These are:

  • Lower River Soar in Leicestershire
  • River Erewash in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire
  • River Maun in Nottinghamshire
  • River Witham in North Kesteven
  • River Witham in South Kesteven

The water levels of the River Trent are expected to significantly rise as rain continues to fall over the coming days. Water will surpass the danger level in the Colwick area between Saturday, October 21 and Monday, October 23, according to Google's 'Flood Hub'.

Indeed they are spectacular. When at sea if the conditions are right its as if they are dancing all round the ship and touching the water if conditions are optimum. A brilliant experience especialy when being paid to be there 😃

I predict it won't be as high. Just like my pension fund. Not worth the paper written on. 😬

Certainly a damp night in Berkshire.

I expect the River will look a bit different tomorrow. Some pulling on the weirs is certainly due very soon.

Never noticed before that the .gov website has rainfall data on it in easily digestible format.

I agree. The automated EA predicted river levels are really often wrong.

Sorry, but I fear you are in for a shock.

The moors are saturated, the rain has another day and a half to come.

I believe Yorkshire will have massive flood problems from this.
