I am organsing  the swap of the engine in our traditional engined narrow boat. It could go in through the roof BUT for convenience I would like to "part" it through the 18" wide Doors/hatches. I wonder if it is feasible to handle the basic unit manually....

Does any one have an idea of the weight of a D3.152 without Flywheel,bell-housing and other removable ancillary bits?

Thank you

John

I would expect a bare block and crank assembly ( less the head ) would be manageable with a lot of care and assistance.  Will it go through an 18" hatch though? You may have to take the timing gear cover and backplate off too.

If the engine is scrap it will probably break down to a manageable size but if you are going to rebuild you will be making a lot more work for yourself.

Can you not get a crane or fork lift in?

I can't answer directly, but have swapped a Beta JD3 through the side hatch. It was tricky and we used a heavily modified and turned arround engine crane.

The JD3 weighs 300kg. Yours is likely similar but might be a little lighter. Even part stripped I think it will be a bit too heavy to lift manually given the poor access. If you already have the access plate in your roof then that would be the easiest approach, if you dont then fabricating a crane might be better.

Thank you both.

It will fit,  the timing cover will clear and stripped down nothing else sticks out.

I am only contemplating this as I shall have to move off our home mooring to a less convenient boatyard to do the work. and the likely slot will be during the cold bit of winter...

depends on how strong you are ........I have a couple of 3/152s in bits in the yard .....and I could certainly lift the block, but add a crank ,rods and pistons ...(and a cast iron sump) and it would be a weight........If possible ,you may be able to 'walk' it out ...........Ive walked quite big engines ............but not now with bad knees ,and miscellaneous arthritic joints...................if you have a steel boat, why not weld a temporary gantry to the hull ,and lift it out with a chain block.

These people have a A3.152 (is this the same as a D3.152? Short engine weight 120kg

Full engine weight for D3.152 from google is 311kg dry.

120kg seems reasonable..............I dont think anyone could lift it in a confined space, but walking or dragging would be possible.

Err... do you think one of those would fit in along with the engine or should I use that instead.:)

I'd stick with the diesel.

Why are you taking a D3.152 out ? They are lovely engines with acres of torque.

In order to  put another D3.152  back in...

You are so right, they are  a lovely engine and it has taken us over most of the inland system BUT

The existing engine seems to have had some "questionable maintenance", maybe a training unit, before we got it and it now needs a thorough overhaul.

Anyways I have a newer engine which will be  a better bet when it's been through the workshop.

I "just" have to get the details sorted so there are no nasty issues when I do the swap away from home!

If you keep an eye on the Perkins dealers, they sometimes have knock out bargains ........last 3/152  short motor I bought was $700 ..thats 350 quid for a brand new short motor ..............they used to call them 'Perpetuity'  motors, and claim they were factory recons ,but that was only for the tax man.....they are new.............the only weak part is the rear main bearing........the crank is often badly worn on the rear main.,and the shells are always needing replacement.

By a co-incidence I noticed that a company called RD Diesels claims to be selling brand new versions of this engine, a bit over £3,000

When we had trucks ,we used to buy a new Perkins for each truck every year, and swap them over Christmas break.........you can beat a new Perkins.

RD diesels have some tasty looking JCB units as well.

There is a bunkering narrow boat on the Thames which has a JCB 444 in it. Serious bit of kit.

The Perkins on their site seems to be a Turbocharged version.

I found the Perkins engine via eBay

Looks normally aspirated.

The JCB engines have a good reputation, too big for a narrowboat but would be fine in a big widebeam 😀 (I think a few have been fitted).

Shame they don't do a 3 pot 😀

I wonder if these are still built here or in the india/china factories?

Its not a bad price for a biggish solid engine.

Perkins belongs to Caterpillar now I think so it probably is a furrin unit.

You have to be aware with small Perks that there are tractor and industrial versions that have quite different blocks .............Anyhoo,seems the 3000 is actually closer to 4000 .........and as a rebuild kit is around 300 ,looks like a rebuild is  a better option, even if a new crank is included.
