Or might it in fact be referring to people bowhauling vessels past the entrance and having unusual interactions with boats entering or exiting the marina.

May be people wearing pantomime horse outfits. That would make sense.

First time I have seen "Please mind the gap" on a canal sign.

Is this sign a windup?

It is obviously not uncommon on the railways ............

How about the read signs not to swim in the spill weirs that are 9" wide and 6" deep or these at Atherston when the gate is open walkers probably wouldn't even see the sign, its on both side so you don't fall up.

The problem in the modern world if someone falls over they are looking to blame someone else so they can sue them, so putting a warning sign up covers CRTs ass.

Is this real or a joke?

Someone in the CRT management must have a mate or a relative with a sign making company.

The wording is unclear. Is it an instruction?

It's because the end of the beam overhangs the wall so if you start pushing on the end of the beam you can walk off the edge quite easily and it is a big drop.

I do know that.

It is incredibly obvious to anyone with basic hazard awareness skills.

More dumbing down.

That is not what the sign says. If the gate is open someone walking along the lock side looking at their phone could walk straight off the end and drop about 4-5 foot

Maybe its obvious to you as you are familiar with locks.

Are there people who are unfamiliar with 5ft drops?

Bit like the label on my car battery telling me not to drink battery acid.

The small personal safes in the cabins of a cruise ship we were on that were only big enough to hold   passports and a  couple  of wallets, had labels warning of danger of suffocation.

So that's maybe 50% of modern society - perhaps CRT are aware of this? Some warning signs are genuinely warning signs, others are anti-litigation signs: they just protect different parties.

Maybe of these at fixed points safely distant from sudden drops and water.

It's just a warning not to keep your pet mouse ini it.

As an example - Looking out for stupid people is  the best way to drive on the roads.

I would say its generally a good idea to be looking out for stupid  people (or perhaps that should be peole who may not  be stupid but could at any moment  do stupid things).
