I dont even think that one is 17m wide any more....its not been dredged for about 15 years and gets the run off from the distribution park above it. I used to be able to turn there (70 footer), in 2008/9, but it's hardly even a winding hole now, just a slightly wider bit of canal. Edited September 13, 2023 by matty40s

Jen-in-Wellies Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 Last time I went through Armitage "Tunnel", I didn't sound the horn, turn on the tunnel light, or wear a life jacket, so this sign was too late for me and I clearly put myself and others in mortal danger. Thank goodness CaRT and their heroic blue sign installers are now on the case. 61m in 2 minutes is less than 1mph, so I was speeding too and could have run over a canoeist even if they did have a headlight.

Ah yes, the mathematical nonsense of “Average transit time at 2mph…”. But as for Armitage Tunnel I feel CRT are damned as they do and damned if they don’t as far as the signage is concerned. It may no longer be a tunnel in the traditional sense but it presents a restriction to navigation that’s much the same as it ever was and you cannot readily see oncoming traffic. It needs signage but perhaps ‘Armitage Narrows’ would be more appropriate.

I noted recently that Braunston Tunnel has black and white signs in the new CRT corporate style. I wondered if these had replaced blue and white signs or some old style black and white signs. magnetman Posted September 14, 2023 Report Posted September 14, 2023 Its interesting they have said it was the CRT who did it when in fact it was BW. I know the CRT took on the BW roles but it still seems a bit wrong to me. The old sign is a heck of a lot better made than the new one. Is the CRT version a "sign of the times" and why didn't they just keep the old one and put stickers over the branding ? Something wrong here.
