Best place to lift out 2023 GUC? Is there somewhere that is the preferred site on this stretch. Or do most folks use their closest marina and they are all much the same.

It might be helpful if you suggested what work is contemplated and your approximate present location. Size of boat may also he useful.

Probably the Best place to come out on the GU is Aylesbury Canal Society at Circus Field.

Covered, illuminated and fan  ventilated slipway (max 72 ft,  30 tons), 32 A 3 phase power available,  3200 psi  Pressure Washer included.  Choice of heights, so you can wash and black the baseplate in reasonable comfort.  Small kitchen included, dirty workshop and paint workshop ( for hatches etc.) adjacent.

Yes quite right. Boat is 57ft currently lying at north kilworth marina on the Leicester line or old grand union.

Im looking to have her pressured washed and blacked, hopefully no nasty extra surprises but if there is to treat rusty bits.

You probably cant beat where the boat actually is now, or its local partner, Debdale down the bottom of Foxton(who also offer gritblasting, Zinga and 2 packing in a purpose built unit if you want to take long term care of your prize floating possesion).

Other places locally are the original North Kilworth boatyard across the canal, Welford marina workshop, Yelvertoft marina, Welton Hythe(now also owned by the Debdale group), Whilton, Stowe Hill, Braunston, Hillmorton....etc etc etc.

We recently had ours lifted out at Debdale then DIY blacking

Lifted out first thing Friday and pressure washed. Then first coat on.

Another coat on Saturday and Sunday before lifted back in on Monday.

Great service and lovely people.

And what did the blacking manufacturer say was the minimum drying time between applying the last coat and reimmersion?

Many need a minimum of 48hrs drying/curing time

People wonder what their blacking doesn't last 🤔😱😉

My point exactly!

I reckon you need at least a week to do the job properly:

Day one: lift out/enter dry dock and pressure wash.

Day two: scrape/wire brush any damaged, rusty or loose areas back to bare metal.

Day three: first coat.

Day four: second coat.

Day five: third coat

Days six and seven: allow blacking to harden.

Day eight: refloat.

If you are also having an out of water survey then you have to squeeze in a day around Day two or three where the surveyor can work unobstructed, so you can do little else that day. Add more time if the survey identifies any patching or pit welding needed, and you want to do it as part of the docking. Also allow for checking stern gear and any necessary work.

While doing the blacking you may also want to paint things like the counter bands and bow flashes, so preparation of these has to be fitted in on the blacking days, with final coats on days 6 and 7.

Depending on the size of the boat, whether or not you are blacking the bottom plate, and the number of bodies available to help, you can overlap the activities a bit (e.g. painting one side while the other is still being prepped), but it doesn't shorten the overall time by much.
