Severn to Worcester Birmingham canal

Hi all,

 

I am currently in Droitwich and I will be going down the Severn to Worcester soon.

When I reach the Worcester Birmingham canal entrance what is the best place to let my wife off to open the lock?

There is a pontoon at the lock entrance for dropping off crew.  It is just past the entrance to the lock when heading downstream.

Just to add- don't try to go straight on to the pontoon when heading downstream. Go 100 yards past the pontoon, turn 180 degrees so that you are moving against the current and you will have much more control of the boat to easily glide up to the mooring.

If there is a good flow on you will want to go in to the lock cutting for the river lock and turn, then come back to the pontoon as there is quite a large weir on the other side of the river and you can get very close when trying to turn.

Those gates are very heavy, and don’t even think of trying to open one until the levels are completely equal.  If no volunteers to help, you will probably have to join her to open the gate.

There are very often volunteers there and the gates may well be open for you as you head downstream towards the lock.
If not opened but people are around by the bottom gates there could be boats on their way down so you can hover and wait.

Take your time drift passed the entrance turn and drop off at the pontoon I then move up to the gates and hold the boat with the engine whilst it's opened ,wife had no problems last month with them

Bevere lock on the Severn.

Does it have specific opening times or do I need to book it?

It is a bit hard to find on CRT stoppages but the times are...

 

River Severn Navigation

River Locks open 7 days per week 8am – 6pm

Please note that Bevere & Holt Locks will be available at the set times below:

 

Bevere: Open 8am – 9am, 11am – 12pm, 2pm – 3pm, 5pm – 6pm

Holt Open: 9:30am – 10:30am, 12:30pm – 1:30pm, 3:30pm – 4:30pm

I will moor overnight at the bottom of the Droitwich barge canal and leave to arrive at Bevere when it's open.

Are you aware of the mooring options on the barge canal...?  I think Hawford visitor mooring, two locks before the Severn, is the last good mooring location.

We came through Bevere last week and it was open all day, despite what the notice says. My advice is give the lock-keeper a call (01905 640275) before you leave the canal.
