In fact it seems the major diameter is 47.8mm for 1.5BSP

 

 

 

So it probably is 1.5BSP which is what most of these are.

This is what I found when I looked up a BSP dimensions table, hence my suggestion of probably 1.5" BSP

The cap arrived! It’s the right thing. Only my incompetence reared it head again. The thing is too big and sits atop the opening rather than screwing down. Have ordered another. Thankfully they are cheap as chips.
