Original Plans Uttoxeter Canal?

Does anyone know where I could view the original route of the Uttoxeter canal in some detail?

I guess a plan must have been part of the Act?

Acts of Parliament usually have a power to deviate from the line shown on the plans. The engineer on the ground could well have modified the line during construction to keep to a contour, minimise earthworks, avoid an uncooperative landowner etc. so the canal as built may not correspond exactly to the Parliamentary Plans.

Thanks bucc. I tried both Waterstones and the Canal Bookshop Audlem. Both out of stock.

I found copies with libraries, but I can ask Richard if he has a spare copy, his maps are worth having if you see any second hand.

In theory, there should be a deposited plan as the Act was post 1793 which should be in the relevant local record office. However, I can't see anything in the National Archives catalogue. This did come up though https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C6413535 Ridchard Dean does seem to have some later railway plans which include details of the Uttoxeter Canal, so that may be where he obtained the information for his maps.

Thanks Tim. Yes seen that I thing Bucc had a similar one for just Canals.

I think what I'm after is prob too specific. Looking at a bit below the farm here in Alton. There where two local wharfs (Mill wharf and a wharf for Lord Shrewsbury) and an alledged weir from Churnet into the Canal.

That is my waterways map, it's done originally in Google Earth with each wayerway saved in a seperate folder so I could save out just the Uttoxeter canal if you want it Mark.

Is that near the woods with the "chained oak"?

I was trying to follow the line of the canal when we stayed at the station recently but in some places it's hard to see which side of the old track bed it's actually on.

If you leave the Station - turn left on the rail track, under the bridge and it's on the left towards Crumpwood Weir. The cranked over fence is the base of Alton Towers. A bit further on and the bed of canal is very clear and an old flood lock too (Carringtons Lock) one of a pair used to cross the Churnet (see below).

Not v relevant to the question, but there are some interesting walks.

Thanks. The fish pass is now complete. Unfortunately it silted up soon after the trumpeting faded away.

It took about 18 months for them to de-silt it - which was done last summer. It sits inside/under the pump house - it also has a camera tracking any migration (red cross). Upper and lower entrances to fish pass shown.

Yes the canal route  is clearly visible in quite a lot of locations.

Not just out of stock - the sole distributor has sold out of all stock, so instead read "out of print".  Peter, CanalBookShop, Audlem Mill
