Red boatyard diesel bought in 2021

In that case it might be a bit diesel buggy. Pour some out into a glass and see if it is crystal clear or has any clagg in it. If crystal clear I'd use it immediately and replace it. Repeat next year.

I'm no expert but just posting to prompt some better informed replies.

Why keep it so long?

Just put the canned fuel in your tank when you get fuel and top up the can with fresh. That way you will have a regular turnover of the canned fuel, so it should be ok when needed in an emergency.

Or do you not use much fuel?

Why do you keep 5 gallons separately from your main tank? Surely better to fill up when the tank is getting low rather than letting it go almost empty on the basis that you have a reserve supply. That way lies problems with bleeding and sucking up crap from the bottom of the tank.

And a Jerry can in the front of the boat is easily stolen.

5 Litres, a sensible emergency supply and useful for cleaning things.
