Further site maintenance

Featured Posts

We will be carrying out further maintenance to Canal World to update the forum software to the most current version of Invision. There will be some feature changes, though the overall look & feel will remain the same.

When will the update take place?

We have pencilled in next weekend. I don't have exact times at present but it will likely be late evening/early hours between Friday and Sunday (7th-9th October) I expect it to take 2-4 hours to complete, during which time the site will be offline.

Below, I have included more background/technical overview around the changes for anyone who is interested. (If you're not overly interested in technical info, you may wish to skim over this bit :))

Key changes include:

Why are we updating?

In short, we're updating the forum software to ensure the future stability of the site, much like servicing our boat engines. If we don't do it, eventually problems arise.

It will also ensure future compatibility/support for the underlying server software while also maintaining our eligibility to receive receive software support from the developers should any issues arise in future.

By continually keeping the site software up to date, it allows us to bring in new features while also avoiding radical changes. Not to mention it means we're doing all we can to keep the site secure.

Will the design of the site change?

The overall look & feel of the site will remain the same though there may be some minor changes.

How can I help?

Canal World is maintained by a team of volunteers who provide their services free of charge at no cost to the forum. However, the site does incur costs elsewhere and as such we welcome all donations. We invest every penny we receive back in to the site. Our costs largely fall into the below categories:

  • Software licensing (Forum software, web design, server software)
  • Server hosting (web & database server, email server, search server etc)
  • Domain registration fees

These costs soon add up and run into the thousands over the course of a year. Making a donation is entirely optional but if you wish to make a donation, you may do so by clicking here

Any questions, please let us know.

Thank you :)

Great work Rich.

Thanks again for planning and executing these updates, both behind the scenes and on the front end software updates.

This site wouldn't be here if it wasn't for our members, however it also wouldn't be here without our dedicated volunteer staff who run the sites technically, keep our finances adding up, and our moderator who ensure the content works for everyone.

Thanks

Hi Daniel

Agreed. But can we be advised which moderator will remain and who will be relinquished of their portfolio? Is there to be a vote on the matter? We disserve to know.

Thanks 😁

Thanks for the feedback.

This update is now complete though we're rebuilding the search index which will take a further hour or so. If you encounter any display/functionality glitches, please do the following:

 • Perform a hard page refresh by pressing CTRL + F5 simultaneously

 • If the issue remains, try clearing your browser cache. Instructions for all major browsers can be found here

 • If that doesn't resolve the issue, please post in this topic and include a screenshot if applicable

Cheers
