Have you sorted your overstay notice yet

Yes tx, breakdown in communication, or lack of.....

Looking at the stoppages map, things seem to be getting worse day by day, I am confident I'll be out of here by the end of the month, just not sure which month!

  • 2 weeks later...

At a meeting last week CRT said despite all pounds being full the HNC will remain closed while reservoirs are low. Considering they only allow 2 boats in each direction per week, and the tunnel pound is like a reservoir, that seems like they don't give a toot that some boaters are stuck trying to get back to base before the winter maintenance kicks in.

Rochdale Update

(maybe I should start a new thread is this is an HNC thread 😀 )

The CRT team has fixed the hole in the aqueduct at lock 35.

The water is back in to the two pounds below the summit and lots of water is flowing down from the summit. The summit pound is pretty much full.

CRT tidied up the site today, taking away all the bags of silt etc etc, though the safety fences are still in place and locks 33 and 36 still have padlocks on them.

I here a rumour that a boat  moved up from Todmorden over the weekend and had some problems due to the large amount of water overtopping some of the gates.

There are a lot of boats waiting down in Littleborough so when CRT open the canal I assume they will have to escort these over the summit in small groups over a couple of days.

If CRT don't open the Rochdale, at least to supervised passages, then all the water flowing down will go to waste.

The HNC currently has significant CRT maintenance work in progress at lock 26, just above Slaithwaite, it looks like replacement of gates, or work on the lock walls, they also have a dredger and a work boat on site.

The water levels are looking good at Spath Reservoir and the pounds up to Marden, for the first time in a few months.

I haven't seen any boats moving on the HNC for a while, I walk this stretch of the canal several times a week, feel free to PM me if anybody would like an update.

I might be wrong about the Rochdale, CRT escorted two boats over the summit this morning as they have urgent needs to move. They reported quite low water levels on the Littleborough flight. So lots of water on the Yorkshire side but still possible problems on the Manchester side.

The low pounds that I mentioned earlier were down to CRT, they had dropped the level to do a bit of leakage investigation. CRT are putting quite a bit of effort into the Rochdale. If its the only Penine crossing open then I expect its going to be like a motorway soon, we might even see more than one boat every day.

From Monday the Rochdale will be open from Lock 7-34 and 45-92. Passage over the summit is also available for prebooked passages only on Mondays and Fridays. Locks 1-7 remain closed for leak repairs between locks 3 and 4.

Ye, that email arrive whilst I was writing the post above 😀 With the aqueduct (culvert) repaired it will be interesting to see if the 35-36 pound now stays in water. My feeling is that the old long term leak was not huge and that the leakage through lock 35 is the more significant water loss. Its looking good at present, I have just walked past it.

That should be "bridges 3 and 4", which are on the pound between lock 3/4 (Tuel Lane) and lock 5.  Locks 5 and 6 are very close together so it makes sense to close up to lock 6, but why is lock 7 closed?

Just had a walk and a natter with the contractors on the HNC at Slaithwaite  who have been working om the canal bank wall. They say it is due to open officially at the end of March, however with the current work rate it maybe a week to 10 days early

Are they sticking any mooring rings atop the new extended wash wall? I've always thought it a crying shame there was no mooring there with easy access to the bakery and brewery.

Is that the bit below the guillotine lock where The Handmade Bakery is? Used to be really difficult to get into the wall there due to depth...

Best home-made baked beans on toast I've ever had though... 🙂

Both the guys i spoke too gave different reply's. The coloured guy was adamant they were.

The bakery is amazing, that's where I was heading. Never tried the brewery bottle shop yet, but I will. off into Marsden later for a beer or 2 in my favourite Pub

Very nice beer from the brewery -- if it looks closed knock on the door, they'll probably let you in if anyone's there.

I went and stocked up on beer there while daughter's BF wound the lock gates up and down -- 160 turns each way, I seem to remember him telling me cheerfully... 😉

Have you spotted the mooring above the other lock?
where a Cafè boat used to be?

There’s also a water tap there.
Unless it’s now gone.
