Looks like the bequest isn’t going to be enough which seems very sad

In that case it would not hurt Braunston marina to chip in, it is their access that    causes the problem for the less sprightly. They could even sacrifice a few berths and reinstate the towpath,

It would certainly hurt the boaters mooring in the marina TBF,  it would trickle down to them paying for sure 🤣

Basically a third of a million to replace the bridge.

While a couple of hold-fulls of hardcore shovelled over the side would in fill the gap and provide a safe, wheel/push chair friendly towpath at ground level for what?  A couple of grand?  Especially if CRT volunteers are involved.

Another advantage would be "Mr.Tim" instead of reducing the number of berths he leases from CRT could reclaim at least another two or three to sit in the refilled gap!

From what I can see the only other issues I can guess in refilling the hole in the towpath is those who moor at that end of the pools can't just nip out.  They'd have to return to the marina entrance.  The same as every other marina moorer in the country does.  Oh, and, the parade would need to change its route, no big deal.

I expect the "initial concept designs" have soaked up most of that bequest.  Why has it taken 4 years ?

There was a suggestion that the ladder bridge could be moved to Welford to save walking round the lagoon.

If it not fit for purpose in Braunston it is not fit for purpose in Welford

I assume that horse traffic had ceased when this was put in?

Not entirely true as one can (and indeed has to) walk around the back of the marina (which is a fraction of the size of Braunston) at Welford. A bridge like this would allow able bodied to cross the marina entrance whilst others could take the detour - that's not an uncommon arrangement on canals

Not uncommon on old structures but a new structure

Still allowed to do it - new structures that are not DDA compliant are permitted where (1) it is not possible to provide a DDA compliant structure or (2) it is not reasonable to expect compliance (middle of nowhere down muddy paths) or (3) where an reasonable alternative is available - at Welford no 3 is certainly the case.

Yes, for genuine commercial traffic.

No, if it is one of the historic boats where horse towage is still used.

So, in 2009 for example, when horse boat Elland arrived down Braunston locks ujnder horse power, it had to do the next stage towed by a borrowed tug, (Dorado in this case).
