Fire at Smurfit Kappa

Last Sunday saw a large blaze develop amongst the stored cardboard on site at the Paper recyling factory at Nechells beside the Grand Union Canal (Birmingham & Warwick Junction Canal) The Fire brigade were there in force to put the blaze out and used water from the canal at bridge 109a.

 

This was the view of water extraction equipment on Tuesday 14th June

I was surprised CRT didn't issue a stoppage

They don't charge the fire service for water extraction.

Even when you can see the canal they open the fire door to put the hose through!

Thats because the pump suction is normally low down and you wouldn't want to try to bend that suction pipe up from the pump and do 360deg bend back down to the canal when you can get away with a gentle sweeping 90 deg one
