Which Compression Tester Kit for BMC1800

TheSaintlyOne

Featured Posts

Have ordered the Fuel Lift Pump and New Filter and expect to replace these in the coming week. As suggested I am going to perform a Compression test. (Well my brother will) so I need to get a diesel Compression testing kit. But what adapter size do I need to make sure is in any kit I buy will be compatible with the BMC 1800.

Regards

A decent kit should come with a range of adaptors but if you intend to use the glow plug holes then whatever thread is on the glow plugs. If you intend to use the injector holes then again a decent kit should come with a selection of adaptors.

Well, that one only reads to 300 psi, I think that you may need in excess of 400 psi. The £26.95 one looks  far more suitable, 1000 psi and what look like some diesel adaptors.

It's difficult to tell if that set has the right adaptor for the BMC 1.8 glow plug holes, which according to Calcutt's website are M12x1.25mm.

The set doesn't list that size glow plug adaptor in the description but there are a couple of non specified silver adapters in the picture that might convert one of the M10 glow plug adapters to M12.

Good luck. It'll be interesting to find out how you get on.

That is why I was careful with my words and definitely did not say that it would be suitable. However, it is more suitable than one with a 300psi gauge.

This illustrates what I think is wrong with Ebay, Amazon etc. A failure to fully describe the product and what looks like false claims to me.

A PM to the seller asking if there is an M12x1.25mm fitting in the box might result in a meaningful answer. OTOH the seller might have no idea what they are selling having (say) bought a load of bankrupt stock at an auction....

That is exactly why such sites should demand a full description. If you went into  a retail outlet, and they said that you could not inspect the product before purchase, and they would not discuss it suitability with you, I would expect you to walk out and go elsewhere. However, on Ebay this seems to be the norm plus often any returns seem to be at the purchasers cost.

Amazon tends to impose higher standards on its retailers. First hit on Amazon gave me this one, which looks just like the ebay kits but is twice the price but the listing states the sizes of all the adaptors. Get what you pay for!

Don't get discouraged. When yours arrives it will probably have the right adaptor in the box anyway.

Running a compression test on a diesel that won't start is very revealing and clears away the clouds of doubt about where the fault lies. If you discover (as you probably will) the compression pressure is fine then you'll KNOW it is a fuel problem, and vice versa.

Well the kit arrived today. It seems very American as all the cars listed as compatible are American cars. However below is the list of compatible adapters and M12x1.25 seems to be there.

I've added the list. Thanks for the help as you can imagine having not has a great deal of fun with this engine in the narrowboat I'm getting tetchy and for that I apologise if I've been too stroppy.

Regards and Thankyou
