Space_Cowboy
Just thought I would share this :- The new power station being built at Newark on Trent (Staythorpe) in Nottinghamshore is having all it's heavy loads delivered by barge from Goole up the tidle Trent to Cromwell Lock. There will be approximately 10 heavy loads circa 300tons each. As these are too large to go through Cromwell lock a new off-loading berth will be built next to Cromwell lock and a road built to the A1. From the A1 the loads can be sent by road via Southam hence by passing kelham bridge. Iam sure you will start to see some activity around Cromwell lock in the next 12 months. BigRoj
Why on earth would they want to build a new wharf at Cromwell complete with a new road? There is a wharf at Sutton on Trent which could be used with direct access to the A1. This is about a mile away from Cromwell!! It all comes down to money, the more they can spend the better, and I'm not on about BW!!
magpie patrick
Don't know the details but would suggest that a new wharf is required for a variety of reasons, related to the fact that these loads are what is known in the trade as Abnormal Indivisble Loads (AIL) 1) Normally you try and get an AIL as close to the site as possible before resorting to road transport 2) the road must be physically capable of taking the AIL: this means weight bearing as well as physically large enough. There is no "right" to move these things so if the road isn't capable of taking the load then it doesn't move. The A1 will probably be constructed to an adequate standards, other roads will certainly not be. 3) The load will probably move (and at 300 tonnes it will be a crawl) at night thus avoid passing through urban areas 4) If necessary street funriture will be removed: street lights, traffic lights etc to get the load through so it is easier to avoid roads with these features 5) Least of the considerations but a hefty crane will be required and suitable foundations for it. If an existing wharf does not have suitable foundations then there will be little cost difference between using it and building a new one
