Finishing cut edges of deck boards

Featured Posts

A quick question: we are replacing our deck boards. What is the best way to finish the cut edges of the boards to protect them? We are using hexadeck rhino. Thinking of thinning down Danish oil with solvent and applying several coats but there may be a better way. Already ordered the boards and can't afford anything more fancy. The old boards have lasted 14 years so if I get half of that I'll be happy.

Epoxy would do a good job.

I have used thinned polyurethane paint, several coats, in the past and it works well. Soaking the edge in a length of gutter is the best way unless you can find a tray big enough.

Thank you. That's an excellent idea.

On an aux outboard bracket I made from a double thickness of 3/4" ply, to seal the edges I just used Puraflex 40 (made by Sika and like Sikaflex 291 but cheaper), let down with some meths and spread it on. Takes a while to dry but seemed to work. It's a polyurethane adhesive / sealant so just a variation on Tracy's suggestion of thinned  polyurethane paint.

Brill thank you - looks like there are lots of options.
