I did say that you should try a new battery. Using jump leads can give you false readings, the leads are rarely thick enough and croc clip don't make good connections for hundreds of amps to flow.

Your right. I tried Jump leads and couldn’t get any turnover. So a new starter battery is now on the list. Cheers.

Have been advised elsewhere that for large twin engines the battery needs to be tip top

I would not call an SR2 a large twin but for any installation the start battery has to be in good condition and large enough for the job. A small car battery is unlikely to start a diesel for long.

First starter battery I had was a lorry engine one and lasted well over ten years. I can't actually remember when I last changed the starter battery, must be at least that. Presumably because it's always fully charged it doesn't get wrecked like the domestic one, but even that happily lasts for about six years, but then the boat's only used six months of the year and I'm minimal on devices.

You presume correctly.
