By this, do you mean the red 'ignition' lamp stays on? Or something else? Please be specific.

If that bulb is blown or disconnected in some way, it will not charge.

Assuming a 9 diode alternator that most are.

 

Check what Tracy said first and if all that is OK the brushes in the alternator may well be worn out. On may alternators the brushes are part of the regulator and fairly easy to change so for more advice a photo of the back of the alternator please.

Further thought. Green lights are often used for low oil pressure warning lamps so you need to be sure there is not another non-working lamp. It is by no means any sort of rule but charge warning lamps seem more commonly to be red or sometimes orange/yellow.
