There are people on here who have done tons of work / research into electric propulsion systems in canalboats, there are plenty of people on here with significant experience of solar installations on boats..... listen to them rather than just posting links to articles that really aren't relevant for the situation you are talking about.

 

On a wide boat I'd go for a serial electric drive with a good quiet generator, battery pack and inverter set up.... and as been pointed out HVO takes the effective CO2 emissions right down.
