Residents are campaigning against the closure of a canal bridge near their homes and say it is 'vital' to their day-to-day living.

A notice was attached to both sides of the footbridge over the Nottingham canal which links Quayside Close to Meadows Close, December 2021.

I think the very simple answer is no disabled access either end due to stepped access...one end being quite a high step.

The developers will have been told to either invest in improvements to bring it up to today's standards, or close it..this being the simplest and cheapest option. Notice displayed at a time of year hoping to sneak by without being noticed.

Who will have told them this?  There is no legal obligation to upgrade existing non-accessible facilities. Only that new or significantly upgraded facilities should be accessible. The bridge doesn't look to be that old, so it is reasonable to ask why it wasn't fully accessible in the first place. But it does appear to have been fulfilling a need for those who can use it for some years.

Removing a facility for the able-bodied just so you can claim to be fair to the mobility impaired is ridiculous!

Its a bit of an oddity really. Just a footbridge linking two residential developments, with no access to the towpath and quite close to Meadow Lane bridge. Its a bit surprising it was put there in the first place.

This is what it looks like on Google Maps:

From Meadows Close:
