Flood alert issued for Billing Aquadrome as Northamptonshire rivers swell with 36 hours of rain to come

Environment Agency warns of water already covering roads close to Nene and Ise

Flood alerts are in force for stretches of rivers across Northampton, Wellingborough and Kettering.

The Nene stretch includes the Billing Aquadrome holiday caravan park where hundreds spent Christmas out of their homes after being evacuated.

Flood alerts are in force for stretches of waterways between Northampton and Kettering

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "Over the last several days we have seen heavy rainfall in the Middle Nene area, River Ise and tributaries between Clipston and Wellingborough and Alledge Brook between Grafton Underwood and Thrapston.

"This means that the Nene and associated tributaries have risen and remain high, which has led to flooding of low lying land and roads close to the river.

"Further rain is forecast over the next few days and we expect the river to remain high, but our forecasts indicate that flooding to properties isn't likely and therefore flood warnings are not expected to be issued.

A similar flood alert — the lowest level in the Environment Agency warning system — is in force in the south of the county for an area around River Tove from Towcester to Cosgrove.

Met Ofice forecasts promise rain for around 36 hours from midnight on Monday night.

The strong streams advice went on for both the Nene and Great Ouse on Boxing Day morning, after days of on/off rain.

We havnt seen the sun here for weeks, and according to the metoffice, it isnt going to appear before the end of their extended forecast next Monday.

However, you do realise that the article you link to was last years, and Billing is not under any danger at present.

Well spotted! The article linked to is indeed dated 30th December 2020.

However, the substance of the warning is current - it's just the website he had linked to has spurious links going back a year, they just refer to the same place!

Actually we had text and email from the EA on Christmas Eve that locks on the Great Ouse would be reversed over the holiday due to the expected rainfall.

....which hasn't actually arrived. We live beside the Old River Nene, and while we've had periods of steady light rain, there has been no deluge.

Arrived or not the Nene and Ouse are both on SSA and the Nene was flowing well and about to break out over the fields below Denford.

Is this a separate messaging system you have to sign up for aimed at licence holders/moorers on the river??

Had to sign up for it but don't know if it's for EA licence holders only

Certainly arrived on the Great Ouse. Not much rain on Christmas Day but plenty since. Guess we're 12 - 15 inches up.

You don't have to be an EA licence holder. We live next to an EA managed river and are signed up. Every time we get an alert our garden floods but unfortunately there are many other times when it floods but we don't get an alert (like the past three days for example - still have a foot or so of standing water). Maybe better than nothing though.

Up here in the Northamptonshire uplands the village brook and the Nene are not all that full. We’ve had plenty of rain but not really heavy stuff. It’s all the concrete and houses in the flood plain that’s the bigger problem and even more being built upstream of Northampton.

The flooding must be quite localised: our bit of Nene remains obstinately at its normal level. The Welney Washes are flooded, but then they always are at this time of year, the clue's in the name. Went across them by train on the 21st, it was a quite dramatic view, like driving through the middle of a lake.

Strange that of the four I click on and then click on the map to see the area it says flood alert removed. So maybe they are not alerts at all 🤭

I have just done the same and found that some have had the alert removed, whilst others are still valid and even warn of worsening conditions.

I guess by the time the alert is issued and the BBC publish and it  'gets onto' Google news it it can be 'old news'.

Is it better to be warned in error, or not warned at all ?
