Winding Burton on Trent

Hi all,

Travelling down from Fradley intending to wind in Burton. There is a discrepancy between Pearson’s, Nicholson’s and CRT map. Does anyone know if the winding holes shown in Nicholson’s  at Horninglow and Shobnall are still useable?

cheers

Yes. Horninglow is probably easier because there is loads of space, and a convenient services.

We went through last weekend and you could definitely still wind in the entrance to Shobnall marina and at Horninglow, or if you're going a bit further on Mercia marina was useful (if you turn up into the entrance there are moorings and winding point right outside the large Midland Chandlers).

When we used to wind or get water at Horninglow the moorers (if it was a nice day and they were sat out) used to hold up home made score cards to score your boating skills in true 'Strictly Come Dancing' style. 😉🤣🤣

Horninglow basin is looking very sad and neglected these days.

I heard boats no longer moor there, but that might not be correct.

It was always a strange mooring spot with the A38 thundering overhead.

There were a couple of boats moored there last weekend but it was pretty quiet.

There were a few boats there when we passed yesterday, but it didn't look like anyone was living in any of them, and there were more empty spaces than occupied ones. There was Heras fencing blocking off all the mooring spaces and the whole place had an abandoned feel.
