Leeds & Liverpool breach

We have been stuck at Top Lock, Wheelton, for nearly a fortnight so will be heading down the flight tomorrow morning and will be trying to get to Wigan top before 12 noon Sunday. We need to get down through Dean lock before 1st of Nov when the winter stoppages begin, or we won't get to our winter mooring.

It doesn't get much better than that.

Directly from the council when speaking to them via email/phone about booking the dry dock the previous years

As Busby used to say "its good to talk", these days so many people think if they cannot find it on the internet it doesn't exist.

BT Busby...I belonged to the Buzby Club lol. | Old advertisements, Childhood books, Childhood memories

My Kids almost never make telephone calls, they just 'text', when asked why, the answer tends to be, "if there is ever a problem with something, I have the written evidence of what was 'said'", apparently you dont need to have a physical conversation that is just 'talking, socialising and covering various things' its a waste of time - what a society we now live in.

Same reason I hardly phone anyone any more. All you ever get is answerphones and no-one rings back. Texting is just more efficient and convenient for the person at the other end. None of my kids ever answer a phone call, and hardly ever respond to emails. The phone was a great invention, now it's really just a camera, music player and a diary with a quick form of comms attached as an extra.

Anyone following relevant CRT notices and anticipating navigation resuming this Friday the 8th April might be wondering if it will happen or overrun. Someone told me last week there was still no water. From the train yesterday, it appears there is, so it's hopeful.P1150053.jpg.62875d0d4b40025d1ed01c1bed8a4f32.jpg

I have heard that although the breach will be opening on time, that they have had yet more vandalism happen to the repairs on Wigan flight and that this may be delayed yet further.

Ah, the travelling virtual C&RT vandal, turns up whenever the job goes wrong.

Nobody on the ground in Wigan last week knows anything about any vandalism other than the comment in the notice update.

Update on 07/04/2022:

We are very sorry to advise that we need to extend this stoppage beyond the 8th April 2022. Amongst many challenges faced on this stoppage from gate delivery delays, equipment breakdowns and also vandalism, there have also been some unforeseen challenges when fitting the gates. The team have got to reset the cills and this means that the concrete behind them will need a couple of days to cure before the lock can be rewatered. The team on site will be working continuously to complete this repair as quickly as we possibly can, this includes weekend working. The navigation is now scheduled to be reopened on Wednesday 13th April after 4pm. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this causes.

Translates as "we are a bunch of incompetant chancers that cannot make things the correct size and deliver on  time"

So the contractors got behind, the gates were late, so claim vandalism that no one else knows about and they can all claim another weeks work and loads of overtime catching up.

The C&RT management are either in a backhander or they are useless at controlling contractors.  So which is it do you think?

The main part is manufacturing the gates to fit the lock is that still in house?

If its the contractors there should be a bonus for finishing early and a penalty for overunning.

Standard practice when I was working, with the exception of work where you were unsure what was needed until it was started. Then you pre agreed hourly rates for the work and materials on a cost plus basis.

Contractors make their money by looking for problems they can list and charge as "extras". To avoid them doing so takes proper planning and oversight. They will be rubbing their hands together gleefully at working through the weekend I'm sure.

I've often said that the specification is the playing field upon which the game if contracting is played.

The contractor reads the specification looking for omissions and/or areas that are not crystal clear and exploits them.
