That's not the whole picture though is it? Sacking loads of lengthsmen does not inevitably result in strings of £50m repair bills.

I accept though, that even one £50m bill really messes up the whole strategy!

Given that the reports seem to suggest that it was predominantly a design weakness waiting to appear then it would have cost the same whenever it was repaired.

The cause of failure at Toddbrook Reservoir on the 1 August 2019 was the poor design of the spillway, exacerbated by intermittent maintenance over the years which would have caused the spillway to deteriorate. It has not been possible to say whether it was the poor design or the intermittent maintenance that was the primary cause of failure on the day. With consistent good quality maintenance over the years leading up to the event the spillway may not have failed.

Whats the deal with overhanging branches etc... are boaters permitted to cut these themselves?

Interesting post on Facebook about this, where a group of volunteers who for the past 3 years have cut back the offside trees/bushes using pole mounted chainsaws etc. This year they were told they would be cutting back the towpath trees, their reply was they wouldn't and voted with their feet.

Just seen the other post

Very commendable.

Was there anything stopping you just trimming back the offside anyway? Or were you using a CRT boat perhaps?

Unfortunately our refusal didn't have the desired affect of forcing them to change their mind.  They've enough other volunteers to do at least 2 days a week which apparently is enough for them to justify using their workboat and hiring the chipper, chainsaws etc. So on the basis it's going ahead anyway, we've decided to give it a go initially at least, the idea being that if we pass anywhere where the offside vegetation is particularly bad we will take the boat over and deal with it. 😉

Even if we can't spend the time to do it thoroughly, at least we can improve it a little for navigation.

I hadn't considered the public liability implications that Alan mentioned, but I think we should be covered. In the past when addressing the offside veg we'd often pop over to the towpath if we saw a particularly low or protruding branch there, so I can't see how this would be any different.
