We are going to Ellesmere port on Kelpie  and we have time for a side trip. If we go to audlem  can we turn a 58 foot boat at the shroppie. Fly?

Haggis, driving down in beautiful sunshine but we  had to scrape the car!

Winding in the entrance to Overwater marina is probably as close as you can get - good bankside moorings along there and only a 5min walk up to the Shroppie Fly (and the bookshop).

There is a winding hole immediately below the bottom lock. There are moorings also below the locks and only a 5 min walk from the Shroppie Fly. The next winding hole if you go up the locks is above Adderley Top lock.

Thanks folks for the info looks like the side trip won't be to audlem. Now thinking about wheelock or a wee trip up the Llangollen. Moored in middlewich tonight so a decision is needed before we set off

The shroppie fly isn't worth a visit in my opinion....Id try the Bridge or Lord Combermere...both much better...and the chip shop is deffo worth it....not forgetting a visit to The Mill for books and craft supplies....in short Audelm is well worth the trip..just moor at the bottom of the locks and walk up...the winding hole is right there..theres even rings along there now..and the view over the Weaver is hard to beat.

We ate at the Shroppie Fly in August and enjoyed it. We were two boats together so a party of 9 and they were friendly and welcoming, and the food was decent. Definitely agree re The Mill though.

You must have had them on a good day.....The chef/landlord can be a little temperamental it seems...

Are you not going to Audlem because you can't wind outside the Shroppie Fly? You can moor just below bottom lock which is where the winding hole is and it's a 2 min walk up alongside the bottom 3 locks to the pub/village.

The reason for thinking of paying a brief visit to audlem was to use up a bit of the free time we have before we go to an IWA  meeting in Ellesmere port

We  thought of mooring in barbridge the night before, popping along to audlem and doing a few locks before probably eating in the lord what's its name and paying a visit to the butcher. Just going to the bottom of the locks doesn't involve much boating and we are out for a wee boating break.

No decision has yet been made by the skipper 😀

You could run up to Wrenbury, the Dusty Miller is ok for food as long as it is open and serving food. They seem to make their mind up on a daily basis as to what they are going to do.

That's another possibility but we were up there a few months ago. Not impressed by the Dusty Miller but used to go to the Cotton Arms which we found ok.

It's looking like wrenbury or Wheelock at the moment

You could always reverse up the flight to town pound to add some fun.....I lock wheeled for "Swan" when she reversed down in the summer.....all I can say is some private boaters have no sense of humour....there was some muttering which I found amazing....sad really!

But even turning at the bottom of Audlem takes you through Hack Green locks.

True and I think that is the current favourite although himself has talked about going up audlem and adderley them winding and coming straight back down ! The jury is still out on that one
