PRM 150 gearbox oil change query

Featured Posts

I have a barrus shire 05 35 engine.

I’m relatively new to boat servicing.

i have just replaced the PRM 150 gearbox  oil with the recommended 1.4ltr of fresh oil but it didn’t come near the dipstick.

I continued to top up and check until I thought I was near enough the top mark. (Very hard to see with this type of dipstick I found)

I measured the old drained oil at 2ltr.

oil is not leaking!

I have no proof it’s a PRM 150 except the spec on the sales particulars.

Anyone understand this discrepancy?

thanks for your time.

Did you screw the dipstick in, or just offer it up? Pretty sure you’re supposed to screw it in.

I was told that if you unscrew the dipstick fully but leave it in the gearbox, the correct oil level will just reach the bottom mark. When screwed in fully it should reach the top mark.

This is correct, the marks are the same distance apart as the thread on the plug.

Have you forgotten that there is an oil cooler and hoses that also hold oil? Hence the larger volume.
